Chapter 60
Gemma

His warm, rough hands skim my bare waist, then he wraps his arms around me and pulls me tight against him with a satisfied
sound.
My heart slams against my ribs. That sound is so primal, so pleased, that it goes right to my head and my heart and a few
other places.
All of the need I’ve had for him in the past comes rushing back all at once, and I press into him and kiss him with a desperation I
can’t control.
I never wanted him to know how badly I need him, but after this? | won’t be able to hide it anymore.
Then there’s a knock on the bedroom door. “Alpha? Your grandfather is here. He’s waiting for you downstairs.”
I break apart from Cassian with a gasp. My head spins so bad I wonder if I might fall down from the dizziness.
“What the hell am I thinking?” I mutter.
Cassian gives me a heated look that tells me he wants me naked,

now. I can’t process it. I can’t process how the man who thought so little of me so recently is now giving me looks like that.
He only wants me because he can’t have me. I know that’s what it is. Nothing else about me has changed.
I mean, okay, yes, I dropped the demure perfect wife act, but that should make him like me less.
“Does your grandpa know I moved out?” I ask.
“No,” Cassian says. His voice is rough and a little breathless. The sound of it turns me on, but we don’t have time for this.
“Then I guess we’d both better go and see what he wants,” I say.
We finish getting dressed and go downstairs. Alpha Donovan waits for us in the living room, where he sits in a comfortable chair.
He rises as we come in and immediately hands me several bags. “I was thinking of you recently, my dear.”
“Grandpa, you shouldn’t have!” The bags are full of things I love. Books and treats and a very expensive perfume he knows I love.
Donovan waves a hand at me. “You know you’re my favorite person to spoil. No one else in the family appreciates it the way they should.”

My throat goes dry and scratchy and the backs of my eyes sting.
I feel so guilty to have him giving me gifts when I’m actively trying to leave this family he cares about so much.
For a moment, I wish desperately that there was any way I could stay and be happy.
But every Blackwell except Donovan has gone out of their way to make me miserable, belittle me, and break me down.
He’ll be sad, but this is my entire life. I can’t live that way just to save the feelings of a single person, even if I love that person very
much.
“Thanks for thinking of her, Grandpa,” Cassian says. He puts his arm around me. When I go rigid, he massages my shoulder with one hand. “She does deserve it more than anyone else.”
Donovan smiles, and his blue eyes–so like Cassian’s–seem to shine as he looks at the two of us. “Ah, I’m getting old. I know this marriage didn’t start how you wanted it Cassian but seeing you two grow close puts my mind at ease.”
Now I’m not the only one who has gone rigid. Cassian has, too.
Donovan doesn’t stay much longer. When he leaves, Cassian says. “So, it’s decided. I’ll have someone pick up your things from

Zina’s.”
I whirl on him and stare in shock.

“No! We already talked about this. I’m not moving back here, Cassian! This is still over!”
He massages his temples, like I’m the one giving him a headache. “You heard my grandfather. What if he comes over again and you aren’t here? I’ll have to tell him that you broke our contract, and that will break his heart.”
“Goddess damn it, Cassian! Can’t you just respect what I want for once? Can’t you just respect me?!
I’m going through the bags as he speaks, since I didn’t look through them very well while Grandpa Donovan was here.
My fingers close on what feels like a bottle of pills and I pull it out. When I see what it is, I close my fingers around it and growl.
“What do you mean, I don’t respect you?” Cassian demands. “How have I not respected you?”
I tear my eyes from the pills to stare at him. “Are you serious? Tell me you’re not serious.”
“I’m serious,” he insists. “I’ve always given you everything you

could possibly want.”

I laugh, even though nothing is funny. In fact, it’s the opposite. I lift the bottle of pills and shake them in his face.
It’s prenatal vitamins. Expensive ones.
“Do you see this, Cassian?” I say. My voice is dangerous and low. “This is actually a perfect example of what I mean.”
