Chapter 55
Cassian

I bring the plane down for a safe landing and toss my headset
aside.
Another successful run. It’s always a thrill, getting things past the government authorities who should be able to catch me.
They never will. I’ve bought off all of the ones who might be smart enough to do it. And the others? It’s fun to watch them scramble.
Usually, the adrenaline and satisfaction is enough to distract me, but this time it isn’t.
All I can think about is her.
It’s been days. I hate that she’s gone this long without reaching out to me or coming home.
Or secretly contacting a servant to smuggle out an insanely expensive piece of jewelry to donate to charity.
That thought makes the corner of my mouth quirk up. I couldn’t believe it when I saw that necklace at the gala. The blue diamonds I told my grandfather to get her for her birthday last year.

Of course, I bought it back. The money went to a good cause,
after all.
I couldn’t wait to see her face when she came back and saw it sitting in her jewelry drawer again. Would she be angry?
Lately I found myself wondering things like that. Things I’d never wondered before. What she thought, and how she’d react to
things.
She never used to intrigue me like this.
I get off the plane and head into my office in the warehouse.
It’s been so long since I’ve seen Gemma, so long since I almost had her in the kitchen at the Pub. It feels like I’m in constant pain, aching for her.
Mate, Zephyr growls at me. She’s our mate. Of course, you’re in pain when she isn’t near.
I’m in pain because I need to get laid, I retort.
Or maybe I need to run. Head to the forests outside of the city and just let loose for a night.
Do it, Zephyr says.

Yeah, right. And then you’ll take over and I’ll come back to myself naked on her doorstep begging for treats.
Inside my mind, Zephyr huffs. It’s basically a chuckle for the wolf. If you were naked near her, it isn’t treats you’d beg for, he says.
I grit my teeth and push the wolf aside. There are things waiting on my desk. Reports. Intel. Proposals and deals from other underworld families.
But when I sit down, I don’t focus on any of it. I’m restless, thinking
of her.
“Cassian?”
My door opens before I realize I’ve heard someone knock on it three times and just not answered them.
I look up and see Reyna. She smiles, but there’s something nervous behind it.
I haven’t seen her since that social media post. Since she bought the wedding ring I had made for Gemma.
Back then, my grandfather suggested something that honored something I loved to show her that I’d try to love her, as well.
I wasn’t planning on loving her at the time. But to please my

grandfather, I’d commissioned it.

I wouldn’t have spent millions of dollars on the damn thing if I’d known she was going to throw it away.
“What’s up?” I ask Reyna.
She comes in and sits in the chair across the desk from me. Then she takes a deep breath and pulls a velvet box from her pocket.
It’s the size of a ring box.
She sets it on the desk and says, “I’ve been thinking it over, and I want to give this to you.”
She opens the box. Sure enough, Gemma’s ring is inside.
I don’t understand why a pang of pain goes through my chest when I see it in person. I know she sold it. But somehow, being confronted with the proof…hurts?
Goddess damn me, I need to get a hold of myself. I was forced into this marriage. My grandfather was tricked. Gemma is a manipulator and a seductress…
Or so I’ve told myself for three years.
I can’t have been that wrong.

“I was worried that Gemma might lose this forever, so I bought it
before anyone else could,” Reyna says softly.
She slides the ring toward me. “Take it. You can still give it back to her. Ask for her forgiveness for whatever you did-”
“Forgiveness?” the word explodes out of me and I shoot from my seat. I glare down at the woman who’s been a friend since we
were teenagers.
“You think I’ve done something that needs forgiveness?”
Reyna’s eyes get big, and she looks confused. “Well…it’s what Gemma said. She said you’re a coward who needs to grovel for her to ever consider speaking to her again.”
I bare my teeth and shove Zephyr down before he can rise and come to Gemma’s defense.
“No.” I can’t deal with the anger I’m feeling right now. I have to let the wolf out. I’ll just have to make sure I’m too far from the city for him to cause trouble when I do.
I shove the ring back toward Reyna. “She doesn’t want it. You do. You paid for it. You keep it.”
I get up and stride toward the elevator with Zephyr growling in my

ear and my transformation prickling against my skin.
I don’t see the smug smile on Reyna’s face as I leave.
