Chapter 29
Cassian

I sit near the window of one of the most exclusive restaurants downtown. Liam, my Beta, is there.
He’s filling me in on the suspicious movements of one of the other
mafia pack families when he suddenly stops.
I frown at him. “Well? Do you think they’re behind the sabotage of
our plane or not?”
“I…no. Not them. Hey. Isn’t that Gemma?”
I turn and look out the window. The glass is one–way, so we can see people on the street, but they can’t see us.
Gemma is walking down the sidewalk with her pixie–like friend, Zina, and someone else. He’s big and wearing a hoodie with the hood up, but I can tell from the way he moves and the flash in his eyes that he’s a wolf.
As I watch, he takes Gemma’s bag and carries it for her. Then the three of them laugh.
Challenger, Zephyr growls. I’m ready to growl with him.

It affects me more than I thought it would to see her with another
man.
Even when I was positive she was a gold digger, she’s still my wife. I’m the Alpha of the Smokewind Pack. What’s mine is mine.
But this is more than mere possessiveness. Seeing her smile at the other man is like a fucking hammer to my gut.
Go after her. Show him who she belongs to, my wolf growls.
I stay in my seat. The last thing I want to do is cause human panic by tearing apart another wolf on the city streets in broad daylight.
Instead, I pull out my phone and dial Gemma’s number.
I see her pause and take her phone out of her pocket.. expect to see disgust on her face when she sees my name on the screen. I also expect her to reject the call.
At the same time, the fact that the phone rings at all means that at some point, she unblocked my number.
Then, she answers.
“Cassian?” she says. Her soft, breathy voice is enough to make me bite down on the back of my tongue.

I refuse to admit how much it bothers me, not having her around the house. It’s empty without her scent. Her voice. Her presence, as much as I used to feel like it annoyed me.
“Where are you?” I ask. My voice is cold as ice.
Now her expression does change to annoyance and disgust. “None of your damn business. Why are you calling me?”
“I’ll give you thirty minutes to show up at home,” I growl.
“Why?” There’s demand and impudence in her voice. It’s the kind of challenge I’ve almost never heard from her before.
It makes me want to claim her, conquer her, more than ever before.
I’ve been silent too long, so Gemma speaks again.
“You think I’m still just going to jump up and do whatever you say, don’t you? Well get over yourself. I’m not.”
Anyone else who spoke to me that way would risk finding themselves weighed down at the bottom of the damn river.
So why do I like being challenged so much when it comes from her?

“If you don’t come,” I say, letting my voice drop low and silky sweet, “Then you can forget about our appointment on Monday.”
“Bastard,” she snaps. Then her voice goes distant. Out the window, I see she’s pulled the phone away from her face. She says, “I can’t do dinner, you guys. I have to go.”
“Where?” I hear Zina demand. I see it, too. They’ve stopped just a little way beyond the restaurant’s windows.
Gemma heaves a heavy sigh. “Back to Cassian’s house.”
Cassian’s house. Not “our house.” Not “home.” “Cassian’s
house.”
I told you, Zephyr growls.
I push the wolf down again.
کر
Gemma exchanges more words I can’t hear with Zina and whoever the male wolf is, then gets back on the phone.
“Fine,” she says. “I’ll be there, but whatever you want, it had better be really damn important.”
She hangs up the phone. I watch her hail a taxi. I tell Liam to meet me later and call my own car.

It takes me forever to find a taxi and get to the place I used to think
of as home.
When I walk inside, Cassian is waiting for me. He lounges on the couch in that smug, enraging way he has.
There are papers spread out on the coffee table, and I immediately recognize the divorce agreement.
He’s got the page up that lists the division of assets. On my side, there’s only one thing in the column. Seaside Manor.
Compared to the impossibly long list on his side of the paper, it’s ridiculous.
“This version is ready for you to sign,” he says. “We can both do it, then take it to the judge on Monday. Everything will be settled.”
I pick up the papers and flip through them. I can’t believe he’s finally doing this.
Then my eyes catch on one thing. The date.
This divorce agreement isn’t dated for Monday. It’s dated for next

year.
“What is this?” I ask in fury, jabbing my finger at the date.
Cassian shrugs. “You’ll get Seaside Manor, just like you wanted. But you have to stay married to me for another year first.”
