Chapter 13
Gemma

I don’t know why, but I feel him, even across a crowded dance floor, up on a stage, surrounded by other people and caught in the
music.
The instant I open my eyes, I just know he’s going to be there.
It still doesn’t prepare me for the sight of him stalking toward me
across the floor like the predator he is, hunting me.
That look in his eyes, the desire, the rage, it grabs me like a fist
and squeezes all the breath out of my lungs.
He walks right up to the edge of the stage and looks up at me. He
pulls back his lips to reveal perfect, white teeth with a hint of fang
and snarls, “Get. Down.”
The music stops. I hear someone else shouting for people to leave
the club and vaguely recognize Liam, the Smokewind Beta.
I’ve only seen him from a distance–we’ve never actually spoken.
He’s tall and lean and handsome in a sort of raw, rugged way. He has short blond hair and impeccable style, and I think brown eyes,
but it’s hard to tell from here.

I know I should listen to Cassian. To defy him in public.would mean death for some people. But the last echoes of the music are still pumping through my blood so I toss my head back and say, “Why should I?”
Something utterly feral crosses his face. He leaps up onto the emptying stage like the jump is nothing, even though it’s at least
four feet. He looms over me.
“Do you know who owns this club, Gemma? I do.”
I don’t flinch back. I’m not surprised. He owns so many parts of
this city, especially the shady ones.
“Fine,” I say. “But you don’t own me, so back off.”
I don’t know where my shoes ended up, so I walk barefoot to the edge of the stage and look around.
I catch sight of Liam. He’s staring at me. I can practically hear the thoughts in his mind. Is this his wife? I can’t believe she’d talk to
him like that!
Just because everyone else in the world kisses Cassian’s ass
doesn’t mean I’m going to do it. Not anymore.
“Get out,” Cassian snarls at Liam.

Liam seems to snap out of his daze. He says, “Yes, Alpha,” then turns and strides toward the doors. I notice he doesn’t actually leave, though.
“Why are you so eager to get me alone?” I ask Cassian in my purring voice again. “Are you finally going to give your grandfather what he wants and put a baby in me?”
Cassian turns a glare so cold on me it’s a miracle I don’t freeze on the spot. He stalks forward again, so I’m trapped between him and the edge of the stage. If he doesn’t stop, I’ll fall off.
He does, but so close I overbalance anyway, my arms windmilling as I teeter backward. He grabs my wrist and yanks me against his hard, hot body.
He slides a finger along the gold and sapphire necklace I always wear, his rough fingers sending heat through my skin.
The rage in his eyes makes me feel wild and hungry. It’s so much
more exciting than the indifferent boredom he’s always given me
before.
“Until our divorce is finalized, you’re a member of the Smokewind Pack and Blackwell family. Do not tarnish our reputation.”
I get up on my toes, so my lips are inches from his. The air between us feels like it’s crackling with electricity. “Divorce me,

and it won’t be a problem.”

With that, I twist my wrist out of his grasp. I think he only lets me go because the move surprises him. I jump off the stage and land softly on the ground.
As I go, I toss words over my shoulder at him. “Why does it matter, anyway? No one outside of your family, your assistant, and your Beta know I’m your wife. No one would recognize me.”
“Gemma!” Cassian snarls. It sounds like the way you’d bark the name of a misbehaving dog.
I laugh without humor, swipe my shoes when I spot them on a table, and keep walking. “Sign those papers, Cassian. Then you can have exactly what you’ve wanted for three years never to
see me again.”
There’s a soft thud. I half turn to see what made the sound, and
Cassian is already there, right beside me. He grabs my wrist and
pulls me against him again. This time, his hands slide down my back and press me against him more intimately.
The air smells like alcohol and sweat and my big, domineering
Alpha wolf, and after hours of dancing, it feels like a drug. I have to
stifle a moan at the feel of his body.
Panic rises up in me at how easy it is to fall under his spell. I have

“Let me go!” I snap, and push against him.
“No,” he snarls.
“Three years of playing your boring little wife was enough,” I shout back. “I’m sorry if you can’t move on, but I’m done!”
Dead silence follows my words.
