Chapter 60
Chris was the first to notice the man on the ground.
He ignored his own wound and quickly rushed over, squatting down to examine the situation.
“Sir, sir, how are you feeling?” he asked urgently.
The man who had been punched clutched his chest and struggled to breathe. His lips had turned a deep shade of purple.
Chris immediately recognized the signs of a heart condition and began searching the man’s body for medication.
But after searching for a long while, he couldn’t find anything. He turned to Jake and said, “Call an ambulance.”
He also asked the restaurant owner to call the police.
The ambulance arrived with a wail of sirens. Chris and Jake rode along with the paramedics.
At the scene, Chris had performed emergency treatment, but by the time they were in the ambulance, the man’s breathing was still faint.
“Coming on a business trip and running into this kind of situation..” Jake sighed. Then he glanced at Chris’s face and added, “ You should get that wound on your face disinfected.”
Chris raised a hand to touch his face. Only then did he notice the slight sting. He shook his head and said he was fine.
The man’s family arrived quickly and heard the full account from the restaurant staff.
Seeing that everything was in order, Chris and Jake left.
He thought it was just a minor incident. The man who had caused the disturbance was even taken into custody.
Chris focused all his attention on the joint consultation.
But two days before they were due to return, Jake suddenly rushed out of the bathroom holding his phone.
“Look online, quick! That day when you saved that guy–it’s gone viral!”
Doctors saving people and ending up online wasn’t new.
Chris was on a call with Jessica and just glanced briefly, not expecting the headline to read:
#Irresponsible Doctor Causes Death Through Excessive Emergency Treatment!#
#Should This Kind of Doctor Be Allowed to Keep Practicing?#
#Tesalfield Doctor’s On–Site Treatment Leads to Fatality#
“Hello? What’s wrong?” Jessica asked when Chris suddenly went silent. She immediately started searching for Tesalfield news
as well.
Chris frowned deeply.
Every step of his emergency care had followed correct procedure.
The man had suffered a heart attack because of the assault, and doctors had simply failed to save him. An official explanation had already been issued.
Why would someone still upload that online?
On the other end of the line, Jessica called out to him a few more times.
“It’s nothing… my mentor’s calling me. I’ll call you back later.”
Chapter 60
With that, Chris hung up the phone.
Jessica, having also seen the trending topic, immediately instructed Shannon to find out what was going on.
The next day, Chris was supposed to perform surgery.
But the growing public outrage and the deceased man’s family causing a scene near the hospital forced the medical team to remove Chris from the final operation.
Jake was furious.
“I think these people are just trying to extort money,” he said, pacing in the dorm and glaring at the flood of online hate. He looked like he was about to grab a mic and start shouting back.
“It doesn’t matter. My treatment was completely professional–there’s absolutely no issue.”
A man with a clear conscience didn’t fear shadows. Chris wasn’t worried at all.
After a moment, Jake let out a heavy sigh.
“You… you really don’t understand how vicious online opinion can be. Let’s just see what the professor says.”
There were still some rational voices online.
Medical students analyzed the surveillance and video angles, and concluded that Chris’s technique had been highly professional. That level of pressure couldn’t have caused death.
But that wasn’t the kind of answer the gossip–hungry public wanted.
Those voices of reason were quickly drowned out.
Bang!
Jessica hurled something across the room again.
Shannon stood outside the door, looking helpless. She turned to Maggie and said, “Go get another ashtray. Don’t go in for now
Maggie turned and left immediately.
When the room finally went quiet, Shannon knocked and entered.
“Have you found out anything?”
Jessica stood by the massive French window, smoking. From the doorway, her expression was completely hidden. It was rare for a woman like her to smoke.
