Chapter 9 A Call from Her Friend
Thinking he was about to kiss her, she held
her breath and instinctively squeezed her eyes shut.
But instead of the anticipated kiss, she heard his smooth, teasing voice.
“You forgot to fasten your seatbelt.”
With a soft chuckle, he pulled the black
seatbelt over her and clicked it into place.
Abigail awkwardly curled her toes, clutching the marriage certificate so tightly her fingers turned white.

Marcus had already settled back into his seat, and seeing her flustered expression, he couldn’t resist reaching over to ruffle her soft hair.
With a teasing smile, he said, “Careful there, if you keep holding on like that, we might need to get a new certificate.‘
Still caught up in her embarrassment, Abigail looked down to find the certificate
crumpled in her grip.
Her face flushed even deeper.
She quickly loosened her hold, smoothing the document with care, her voice soft with apology. “Sorry, I didn’t mean to do that.”

She had always been praised for her
composure under pressure, but around
Marcus, she couldn’t seem to keep it together.
Noticing the color rising in her cheeks, Marcus chuckled, “It’s okay, no rush. I’ll help you get used to it.”
Abigail’s face turned an even deeper shade of red. She couldn’t shake the feeling that
he was hinting at something more.
Although she wasn’t inexperienced in relationships, Marcus‘ charm and warmth, especially when compared to the cold, arrogant Felix, made him nearly irresistible.
When she asked him to marry her, she felt

in control, but now it seemed like Marcus
was the one calling the shots.
She needed to regain control before she lost herself completely.
As she mulled over her thoughts, the
sudden ring of her phone shattered the
silence in the car.
Glancing at the caller ID, she answered
without delay.
It was Gianna Rowe, her best friend, who had been overseas for a program for
the past six months and had missed the wedding due to travel issues.
True to her fiery nature, Gianna didn’t waste

a moment. “Abigail, I just arrived at the venue and heard the wedding was called off. What happened? Did that jerk do something to mess with you?” she demanded as soon as the call connected.
“The wedding was called off?” Abigail echoed, bewildered. Who said that? She didn’t cancel the wedding, she just married
Marcus!
“Felix told me!” Gianna spat. “Won’t even tell me where he is! I swear, if I could get my
hands on him right now – after all you did for
this wedding, he just cancels everything!
Unless he’s lying on his deathbed, there’s
no excuse for this!”
Abigail, absorbing her friend’s fiery words,

asked gently, “Did you call him? What did he say?”
“He claimed it was because you two had a fight, that you weren’t happy, so the wedding was postponed until you calmed down. Then they’d reschedule it,” Gianna replied, not holding back a curse. “That’s
complete nonsense. Not a word of it is
true.”
Abigail’s expression darkened.
She hadn’t anticipated Felix would place all the blame on her and hide the fact that she
had married someone else.

down?
A bitter smile played on her lips. “Why don’t you believe him?”
Gianna’s response was unwavering. “It’s
not that I don’t believe him. I just know you
too well. You’ve invested so much into this
wedding. You’ve dreamed of it for so long. There’s no way you’d cancel it over a minor argument. Something must have crossed your line. He must be the one who messed
up.”
Abigail’s heart ached as she thought of her friend’s words about the wedding she’d once dreamed of.
She opened her mouth to speak, but the car

suddenly lurched forward, tires screeching against asphalt.
The seatbelt dug into her chest, stopping her from hitting the dashboard.
“Sorry, I got distracted for a second,” Marcus’s deep voice broke the silence.
She glanced at him, catching the tension in his jaw, his face masking something he didn’t want to show.
Was he mad? But why?
