Chapter 7
A few days later was the Whitfield family gathering.
1 hadn’t planned on going, but thinking of Grandpa Whitfield, whom I hadn’t seen in so long, I put on a dress and headed over.
I was leaving soon. No matter what, I needed to say goodbye to him.
As soon as I arrived at the old mansion, I saw Knox walking in hand in hand with Vivian under everyone’s watchful eyes.
Bringing his mistress to a family gathering was a blatant slap in my face.
But I felt no heartache anymore. I was beyond caring.
I ignored the whispered gossip and went straight to Grandpa’s bedroom.
“Grandpa, Knox and I… we’re divorced.”
The moment I entered, I got straight to the point, telling him about my plans to leave.
Grandpa Whitfield bolted upright in bed and grabbed my hands. “Child, are you angry with Knox? Listen to me–he does care about you. That woman he’s keeping, there must be some misunderstanding.”
“Grandpa.” I smiled sadly. “Please don’t try to convince me. I’ve thought this through completely. After everything he’s done to me recently, regardless of his feelings for Vivian, Knox and I are finished.”
Seeing the pain and determination in my voice, Grandpa Whitfield let out a long sigh.
“Fine. It’s his loss, Celia. Remember, even if you’re no longer my granddaughter–in–law, you’ll always be my beloved little girl. As long as I’m alive, that woman will never set foot in the Whitfield family!”
My nose stung with emotion.
In my previous life, Grandpa had protected me the same way.
“Grandpa, please rest. I’ll get you some warm milk.”
I went to pour him a glass of milk, and when I returned, I was about to knock when I heard a muffled thud from inside.
“Old bastard!” Vivian’s voice seeped through the crack in the door. “How dare you try to keep me out? I’ll kill you!”
My blood turned to ice.
I burst through the door to see Vivian pressing a pillow over Grandpa’s face with all her strength. The old man’s frail hands clawed weakly at the bedsheets–he was barely moving.
“What are you doing!” I rushed forward and shoved Vivian away.
The pillow fell to the floor as Grandpa’s face was purple and blue, unconscious.
“Help! Call an ambulance!”
My screams brought everyone running.
Knox was the first to burst in. Seeing the scene, his face went white. “Grandpa!”
He scooped up the old man and rushed toward the door. As he passed me, his eyes were cold as ice.
The hospital corridor lights were harsh and unforgiving.
The surgery room light stayed on all night while I sat on the bench, my hands shaking uncontrollably.
Vivian huddled in Knox’s arms, sobbing quietly while shooting me venomous glances.

Chapter 7
At dawn, the doctor finally emerged. “Mr. Whitfield, the old gentleman was without oxygen too long. He’ll most likely… remain in a vegetative state.
Hearing that, Knax punched the wall so hard his knuckles split and bled.
In the VIP room, Knox looked between the two of us with a dark expression. “What exactly happened?”
“It was her!” Vivian immediately pointed at me, screaming. “She was trying to kill Grandpa! I walked in just as she was smothering him with a pillow!
I stared at her in disbelief. “Say that again?”
“I’ll say it as many times as you want!” Vivian sobbed pitifully. “Knox, I was so scared–she almost killed me too…”
Knox’s gaze grew colder and colder until it felt like a blade of ice piercing my heart.
“Celia, Grandpa was so good to you. How could you d
