Marilyn
She’d thought she’d known everything about them prior to coming here to Houston, only to now realise she d known about her life prior to that divorce, not the six weeks that had come with the settlement of the divorce So she’d been happy to extract payback upon him, make him suffer all the things he’d done to her six months ago.
Only now, she knew she’d not accounted for those last six weeks, the pain of once again having to deal with being alone and unwanted, and that was how those weeks had made her feel. She’d had moments during those six weeks of just laying in the marital bed, feeling heartbroken and all alone, had realised she was lonely in that big empty house, with him never coming home anymore.
It had taken time to get her ass up some days and do the things she needed to do to get her new life organised. Other days she’d just been angry and got up and done what was needed, until, in the end, she had found Marrin Huxley, the girl that could survive anything, the girl that had survived being beaten by an abusive foster parent and then tossed uncaringly down into dark dank basements for days on end, with
nothing but water. A girl that had been starved at times and left to fend for herself after school. She’d learned
at just six years old the world was cruel and full of inhumane people that looked like they had the perfectly happy, healthy families.
She’d learned at seven to spend those few hours a day alone, prepping for the next time she was locked away in that hellhole that had nothing down there, no light, no bed, just the cold concrete floor and a set of stairs that led down there. She’d learned to cook potatoes and store them under the stairs where no one could see
them so she didn’t starve to death.
“Marilyn?”
“I don’t want to talk to you, Calvin.” She murmured and looked out the window absently at the passing cars and shops as he drove them to his apartment. All the fight in her was just gone. The long climb down those 20 floors had drained her of her energy and her legs pained her. Stairs weren’t something she did in mass. Because it made her left ankle painful afterwards, she was going to be in pain tomorrow, and worse than she
was now.
“Do you remember everything?” Calvin murmured quietly.
“Yes.” She stated simply, “And I don’t want to talk to you, so just stop. Or pull the car over and let me out, I’ll walk.” She told him, not that she wanted to. That would only make tomorrow’s pain even worse. She looked about the car, and then opened the console between the seats he had always kept two small bottles of water in there. She got one out and twisted the cap from it, took a drink and then placed it in the drink holder while she opened her purse and pulled out her pain relief.
She took two and washed them down with the water. “What is that?” Calvin asked her.
“Pain relief.” She answered simply.
“Why?” he asked.
She turned and looked at him. “Do you really think I don’t have residual pain left over from the car accident was in?” she stated. “Did you read the medical reports at all? Because if you did, you’d know just how broken

I was.
She heard him sigh heavily. “I did… I also saw the pictures of you from back then.
“Then asking why I need pain relief is a stupid question, don’t you think? I may not let it be seen, but my still hurts Calvin, my left ankle has pins in it, and walking stairs like that hurts. It will affect how I walk tomorrow even, my ankle will likely swell and be painful for days,” She told him.
“Then why…”
“Shut up,” she grated out. “I needed to be away from you is why, you shouldn’t even have to ask that question Sometimes, Calvin, people do stupid things in the heat of the moment, even when they know it’s going to hurt themselves later on,” and that was all she’d done, not thought about her ankle when she’d stalked off away from him.
Now she was going to suffer the consequences of her own foolishness in walking down 20 flights of stairs. The damage had already been done by the time she’d gotten halfway down them and had to stop and take her shoes off. There was nothing she could do about the pain she was going to have the next day, so she’d
continued on, just slowing her pace down was all.
He sighed at her words and she ignored it, just returned her gaze out the window. Neither of them spoke for the rest of the drive to his apartment, and she got out of the car and winced as she put weight on her ankle and looked down at it. It was already swollen and walking was going to hurt like a b***h.
She closed the car door as he came around and to her side, and before she knew what was happening, he just scooped her up bridal style and was walking away with her through the underground car park, heading
for the elevator.
“What are you bloody doing, Calvin?” she grated out.
“Helping you, whether you like it or not. You clearly can’t walk on that ankle, so I will carry you,” he stated
back calmly.
“Put me down.” She muttered. She didn’t need to know what it felt like to be carried by him, or helped by him. She’d been looking after herself all her life and could do things on her own.
“No. Fight me, struggle if you must against me. But I will not stand here and watch you cause pain to yourself. When I can ease it by something as simple as picking you up.”
“I’m not a little girl that needs carrying around. I’m a grown woman.” She snapped at him.
“Yes, a very stubborn, argumentative woman with a brilliant mind, who at times is vulnerable and needs help from those around her!” he looked right at her “press the button.” He stated as they came to the elevator. “Or you’ll be stuck here all night in my arms, I’m not putting you down unless its on a couch or in a bed, and you’ll be accepting my help of getting you an ice pack and strapping your ankle as well.”
“I can do all of that myself,” she told him flatly.
oing to put her His hazel–green eyes met hers, and she knew by the stubborn set of his jaw that he wa down, even when she struggled to get down, his grip just tightened upon her. “So bloody stubborn, he grated out after several minutes. “Fine Let’s play it your way,” he stated, and turned and walked away, heading for the garage entrance.
She glared at him and snapped, “Just put me down.”

“No, you can’t walk.” He snapped right back, and she gasped when he kicked the exit button on the wall, with a foot and the gate rolled up, and then he was just carrying her up the driveway.
“What are you doing, and where are you going?” she asked.
“Through the lobby where the doorman can push the damned buttons, because you’re too stubborn to let me help you. All this could have been avoided if you’d just pressed the elevator button. Too late now,” he stated, and strode them towards the front doors of his building, uncaring of who saw them.
The doorman opened the door for him. “Evening Mr Reeves.”
“Luke, could you get the elevator for me please, Miss Riddley has a swollen ankle and can’t walk right this moment.”
“Of course,” Luke had stated, “It’s good to see you again, Miss.” She could see he was the same night doorman that had been here all those years ago when she’d been Calvin’s wife.
“Luke.” She greeted him back, not wanting to be rude. Luke even leaned in and swiped his access card to the
panel and pressed Calvin’s floor and bid them a good night.
She again tried to get Calvin to put her down in the elevator, but he wouldn’t just stood there and ignored all her struggles and telling him to put her down. He didn’t say a damned word at all. He just adjusted his grip on her at times, and by the time the elevator had arrived to his penthouse floor, she’d stopped struggling. He
was as stubborn as she was.
“Press the doorbell please.” He stated, “I can’t get my keys out right this minute.”
She glared up at him and then reached out and pressed the bloody button. His father opened the door and blinked, stepped aside and Calvin strode through the apartment and put her right down in his bed. She went to get up and found herself caged in. “Stay put, just accept my helping you, it’s not that hard to do. You can’t walk on that ankle and if I have to, I’ll pick you up once more, take you right to the hospital and carry you into the E.D. like I did here, for treatment. I’m going to get you an ice pack,” he stated, “I’m not trying to seduce you, just trying to tend to your injury is all.”
She glared up at him, and he smiled down at her. “Keep fighting me on this and that very possessive, dominant husband you were married to,” he leaned down until his face was a mere inch away from her own,” might just seduce you,” then his lips touched her forehead in a soft tender kiss “I want to treat you right, love you like you deserved to be loved.” He told her softly and his eyes met hers once more.
“And I understand you’re angry and upset right now with me. But you’re also in pain and I can’t stand that, to be honest. I need to help fix that, and you can beat me senseless when you’re feeling better, for how things fell apart. I’ll take it all, deserve it. I know that,” he stated simply, and then stood up and pointed at her. “Stay put.” He warned her.

She was just staring at him as he walked from the bedroom. She kind of didn’t really know what to say to him, she could see his mother looking at her, and she mouthed ‘What happened?‘ to her from doorway.
Marilyn sighed and pushed herself up into a sitting position, “He knows.” She muttered.
“Oh, so the secret is out.” Kay half smiled. “What’s wrong with you?” she asked, walking into the room. She could only nod in response. “I walked 20 flights of stairs and,” she looked at her ankle. “Now it’s hard to walk.” She indicated to the swelling. “He went all… I don’t bloody know.” She muttered, and Kay chuckled, but
