Lucas sat at the breakfast table, sipping coffee, which was already cold. His eyes darkened as he stared at the row of empty beer bottles lined up against the wall, his voice strangely at odds with his expression.
“I knew you’d still be up this late. After all these years together, Kenneth, I understand your body clock pretty well.”
Over the years, Lucas had picked up bits and pieces about Kenneth’s family situation from Eleanor and Victoria.
Even though he’d successfully driven Kenneth overseas, it still made his blood boil to think of the guy living comfortably abroad, protected by his parents and enjoying a life of privilege.
This time, he’d managed to convince Eleanor and Victoria to
let him contact Kenneth, and he wasn’t going to waste the
opportunity.
He quietly pressed the record button on the voice recorder sitting
on the table before steering the conversation where he wanted it
to go.
“Kenneth, it’s been so long since everything happened. We know
now that we were wrong about you, that you weren’t trying to
scam us. Can’t you find it in your heart to forgive us?

“We looked everywhere for you in the country, asked everyone
you knew, but couldn’t find any trace of you. We were worried
something terrible had happened. It wasn’t until we discovered
you’d sold your house that we finally lost hope.”
Kenneth sat alone in his spacious room, the late–night silence amplifying every sound.
Lucas‘ voice came through the phone with painful clarity, each word hitting him like a drumbeat against his heart.
He couldn’t believe these people had managed to get his contact
information from someone at the real estate office.
“You really went to a lot of trouble, didn’t you? I had no idea I was
worth all this effort,” Kenneth said sarcastically, unable to keep his composure when talking to the person who had started all this
mess.
He needed to release the anger building in his chest.
What Kenneth didn’t realize was that his bitter response was
exactly what Lucas wanted.
As Lucas watched the recording light blink on his voice recorder, a
cold smile tugged at his lips.

His plan was working perfectly–he wanted Eleanor and Victoria to hear Kenneth’s true thoughts and finally give up on him completely.
“What are you talking about, Kenneth? Of course you’re worth it to us!” Lucas replied smoothly.
“If you really come back and forgive Eleanor and Victoria, I’ll return everything I got from you both. Remember those shoes you liked? I haven’t even worn them yet! I can give them back to you. I don’t want to be the person who ruins your friendship!”
Lucas knew exactly how to ignite Kenneth’s anger.
By shifting from abstract emotions to specific items, he was deliberately pushing Kenneth to lose his calm and become
agitated.
Sure enough, hearing the breathing grow more rapid on the other
end of the line, he smiled and brought the phone closer to his
voice recorder, not wanting to miss a single detail.
“Lucas, do you really think I care about those shoes? Or maybe
you think what I care about is that Victoria bought them for you?”
Kenneth’s voice shook with emotion.
“I just can’t understand how someone like you managed to come between us, enjoying this twisted situation! You’re feeling pretty
