Chapter 6
My voice was calm and almost indifferent as I responded, “Jasper, if you don’t need my family, why did you sneak into my family’s private event?”
The event was strictly invitation–only, and he hadn’t been invited. Coco was the one who had convinced the security guards to let them in, claiming he was the Jennings family’s son–in–law. That was how they got in.
Caught red–handed, Jasper couldn’t help but fly into a rage. But I wasn’t about to let him off. My voice dripped with contempt as I reminded him, “Also, don’t forget to return that rented dress Coco is wearing.”
Coco’s eyes widened in disbelief, and she blurted out, “Didn’t you say it was a gift for me?”
I was a VIP at Seraphine & Co., and the sales associate there was aware of my relationship with Jasper. Hence, the moment he rented that season’s haute couture dress, she came
running to me. “Ms. Jennings, Mr. Swanson wants to rent the gown you had your eye on…”
Technically, they didn’t rent out their latest collection, but they made an exception for me. The sales associate was curious but didn’t dare to ask Jasper in person, so she came to ask
me about it.
When she learned that I had already called off our engagement, she almost burst into tears. I felt sorry for her, but there wasn’t much I could do for her; I could only pray she’d be able to get the gown back.
As soon as her words fell, a commotion erupted at the entrance. The sales associate was
attempting to barge into the event.
The security guards stopped her, but she craned her neck and yelled, “Please be careful
with that gown, Mr. Swanson! It’s worth tens of thousands of dollars, and I can’t afford to pay for it!”
The young lady looked like she was on the brink of tears. This was probably the worst
moment of her career.

Everyone turned to look at Jasper with an amused expression, while his cheeks turned bright red. Coco looked stricken, and Jasper, ever prideful, snapped, “Isn’t it just a dumb dress? I’ll buy it! Happy now?”
The sales associate was relieved. She whipped out the card reader. However, Jasper’s expression became as dark as coal when the machine displayed: “Insufficient balance.”
was a complete disaster. In the end, an acquaintance of Jasper couldn’t take it anymore nd stepped in to help him out. However, from that day on, Jasper was effectively cast out of Amveris‘ high society.

I had finished all my paperwork and was about to leave the country when I ran into Jasper at the airport. He appeared more worn out than before. He stepped in front of me, blocking my path. “Why are you leaving?”
“What does it matter to you?” I shot back coldly.
He seemed hurt, an expression I had never seen before. He lowered his head and explained,
“I didn’t mean to hurt you at the hospital that day. I honestly thought you were trying to use the baby to force me into marrying you.”
Our engagement had been arranged by our parents long ago. Once I found out, I couldn’t keep my eyes off him. Even though he was always indifferent toward me, I followed him everywhere.
Then, one day, when I was being harassed by a group of thugs on the street, Jasper, who
had already left, suddenly came back and landed a punch squarely on one of their faces. In
the end, he was outnumbered and couldn’t fight them off, and the whole group was hauled
off by the cops. The bruises on his face were like a badge of honor in my eyes.
From then on, I stuck to him like glue. Then, Coco returned from abroad, and whatever
warmth we’d begun to share froze over in an instant.
“What’s the point of saying all this now, Jasper? It’s over between us.” With that, I turned
