“Is that why they brought Nancy down?” I ask.
“Yep. They weren’t positive she was the one helping him, but Christian will find out.”
I’ve just finished washing my hands and checking to see if dinner preparations are running smoothly when Christian and Shane emerge from the cells.
“Well, that didn’t take long,” I say.
“It helped that Alpha Christina timed slamming Dorian into the table like she did. Nancy was terrified that we’d start beating a confession out of her, so she sang like a canary,” Shane says. While his words sound pleased, the tightness around his lips lets me know there’s more to it.
“Let’s take this to a more private location,” Christian says, looking around. “There are still people we haven’t identified that were part of this.”
I turn and begin walking to Shane’s office. I feel Christian’s consciousness brushing against mine and I open the mind link to him.
‘Are you doing okay? That was a lot.‘
‘I’m good. Your mother is incredible. She really got under Dorian’s skin.‘
‘She’s good at using someone’s anger to get them to lose control and make mistakes.”

I expect him to close the connection, but he doesn’t so I leave it open on my end too. He brushes his consciousness against mine again. It’s a gentle caress against my mind that somehow feels more intimate than the kiss we shared last night. It makes my entire body clench with desire.
When we get to his office, Sebastiana takes Shane’s hand and pulls him to the loveseat so they can sit together. I grab a chair and Christian steps behind me, putting his warm hand on my lower back as he reaches around me to grab a chair for himself.
“So, Nancy was part of it?” I ask as we sit.
“She was. She said she was working with Dorian, that he promised to take her as his chosen mate once he was Alpha,” Christian says.
It’s not the words so much as the way he’s looking at me that makes me suddenly feel a bit sick to my stomach. When I look at Shane, his lips are pressed so tightly together that they are white. Sebastiana is watching him and he’s holding her hand so tightly that his knuckles have gone white.
“What did she do?” I whisper to Christian.
He takes my hand in his, turning his chair to face me. “Your father was murdered. He was slowly injected with silver which is what kept his body from healing. But the injection was slow enough that it wasn’t obvious.”
I feel my lips quiver. “And slow enough that he would have been in horrible pain all that time?”
“I’m so sorry, Enya. I’m going to report this to the Council tonight. It’s possible that this is why it has taken them so long to get back to us about the medical records we sent to them. There were obvious discrepancies in your father’s records but without being a doctor, I

I close my eyes, fighting against the pain of knowing that my father was slowly poisoned to death. When the first tear slips out, Christian scoops me into his lap, cradling me like he’s done at night when I cry.
“I’m so sorry,” he says softly against my ear.
I cling to his shirt, burying my face in his chest. I can hear Sebastiana murmuring softly to Shane. I know this is as hard for him as it is for
