I watch Christian pace in front of me, his hand going through his curly hair, that wayward curl falling right back onto his forehead. I can see his jaw ticking in frustration, anger, or an attempt at patience. Who knows. All I know is that he’s angry at me and I did nothing wrong.
“I am perfectly capable of defending myself,” he growls.
“You weren’t around!” I growl back.
He turns on me. “What if she attacked you?”
“I would have reminded her that I’m an Alpha. I may not have impressed you yesterday on the sparring field, but I actually AM a good fighter,” I say, stepping up to him. How dare he be angry with me for defending him?
“That’s not the point!” he says, getting in my face.
“Then what IS the point, Christian? Why are you mad at me? I did nothing wrong!”
“I’m not mad at you, Enya. I’m worried about you.”
I jut my chin up at him. “Well, you don’t need to worry about me, Christian. I won’t come crying at your door anymore. Goddess knows who might be warming your bed. I wouldn’t want to interfere …”

“I am perfectly capable of taking care of myself,” I say.
“I have no doubt that you’re an excellent fighter, Enya. I have no doubt that you could have wiped the floor with Violet as you said. But that doesn’t mean that I don’t take your safety very seriously,” he says. The growl in his tone has turned into something different, something that is making my body respond.
“You don’t need to worry about me,” I say softly.
His eyes drop to my mouth.
“Don’t I?”
I lick my lips, as my mouth goes dry. His growl gets louder.
“No,” I say, my voice barely a whisper.
“No?” he asks, his voice as quiet as mine, but still full of an emotion I can’t quite identify.
I shake my head. My mouth is so dry I’m not sure I can speak.
“What if I like worrying about you?” he growls before his mouth crashes against mine.

When I walked in to find Violet and Enya squaring off, the first thing that came to mind is what if Violet is part of Dorian’s group? Enya could be at risk. I have no idea how many people are part of throup to undermine the Alpha family, but I’m not willing to risk Enya or Shane.
I have no doubt that Enya could have defeated Violet in a fight, but

that’s not the point. I needed to make an example of Violet so the others realize that I’m absolutely serious about not allowing anyone to undermine them. And I need to talk to Enya. What if I hadn’t walked in when I did?
To hear her say that she was defending me both excited me and infuriated me. She doesn’t realize that defending me puts her at risk and there is something deep, instinctually deep, inside me that refuses to allow Enya to put herself at risk for me.
And then she just had to go and fight me on this, telling me that she’s capable of taking care of herself. Does she not realize that is not the point? I am her guardian! It’s MY job to take care of HER.
