When I left Logan’s room last night, I stopped at James‘ door, but I didn’t go in. Instead, I came to my room. I sat on the couch. and thought through what he’d said. The young Alpha that I thought was the most unobservant of the group. ended up being the one who made me face the hard truth. I have to tell James that this isn’t enough for me anymore.
I stayed up all night, working through every possible way this conversation could go and deciding what I can live with and what I can’t. I love James. I’m in love with him. I want him to be my mate. I don’t care if neither of us has a pack. We have the Academy. We’re both too old to have a second family, but I don‘ t think that will matter to him any more than it matters to me. This is about us, about choosing to create a life together, wherever that will lead us.
When my alarm goes off in the morning, I’m still sitting in my robe on the couch. I grab my things to go shower. When I open the door, James is leaning against the wall on the other side of the hallway. It doesn’t look like he slept at all last night either.
“You didn’t come to me last night,” he says, his voice raspy.
I shake my head and open the door, inviting him in. He pushes off the wall
a grace that I’ve always admired. It’s unusual
for a man as large as he is to be so graceful.
When he walks in, I see him subtly sniff my room as if checking

to see if Logan’s scent is in here. Then he turns and looks at me, his eyes piercing mine with his intense gaze.
“What’s going on, Sylvie? Did something happen last night with Logan?”
“Have a seat, James.”
“I’ll stand,” he says, and I sigh. He’s not making this easy for me.
“Did he hurt you?”
“What? No! No, it’s nothing like that,” I say, and I watch his shoulders relax before he nods.
“You had intercourse with him? It was too uncomfortable to come to me after that, is that it?” he asks, his hands clenching into fists.
I lean toward him, putting my hands on my hips and glaring at him. The movement makes my robe fall open, but I don’t care. “Are you going to let me talk, James, or are you going to continue to dominate the conversation?”
His lips twitch and his gaze drops to my body before returning to my face. “Sorry, Sylv. Why don’t you tell me what’s going on.”
“Thank you and sit your ass down. I’m not going to feel smothered in my own room by your Alpha aura.”
“Yes, ma’am,” he says, giving me a genuine smile this time. He’s always enjoyed my spunk.
I pull my robe closed, wrapping it tightly around me as I sit across from him. The smile fades and he focuses that intense gaze on me again.

“Logan ended our time together.”
He frowns. “What do you mean?”
“He recognized that I was struggling being with him and he said. he didn’t want to force me into anything. He said you and I needed to figure out what’s going on between us. That’s what I‘ ve spent the entire night thinking about.”
I watch his entire body go rigid. “Do you want to fill me in on those thoughts?” he asks, his voice as rigid as his body.
“I can’t do this anymore, James, not like we have been. I know we agreed to keeping things between us casual, we were both struggling with finding happiness after losing our mates, but it’s not enough for me anymore,” I whisper.
“What do you want, Sylvie?” he whispers.
“I want more. I don’t want to wonder who you’re with on the weeks we’re apart. I don’t want to spend those weeks apart at all. I want a mate. I want you to choose me, put your mark on me, and tell everyone that we’ve chosen each other. I know you‘ re probably not…”
Before I can finish, he’s across the room, his mouth crashing. against mine. He stands, holding me to him as his strong arms wrap around me without letting my mouth go. I wrap my arms around him, feeling his body shiver underneath my touch. It feels like he’s pouring his love into the kiss, filling me with it.
When he finally pulls back, he presses his forehead to mine. “I was waiting until the end of the semester to have this same conversation with you. I haven’t been with another woman in years, Sylvie, not since I’ve been with you. From the moment we

“Really?”
He pulls back enough that I can see that his canines are extended. “I’m ready to mark you right now, right this minute, if that’s really what you want.”
“What about classes?” I ask.
“It’s Saturday. I don’t have any classes this morning and nothing is more important than you and making sure you know that I mean what I’m saying. Right here, right now, if you’re sure you’re ready,” he says.
I hold his gaze as I lift my chin, giving him the access he desires.
He rips my robe in half, laying me on the bed and quickly stripping before settling between my thighs.
“Mine!” he growls, before sucking the skin of my marking spot. into his mouth while he slides inside of me.
“James!” I cry as tears begin to fall. I wasn’t sure what to expect. when we talked, but this immediately acceptance and claiming

I open myself to him, letting him feel my happiness and my love. for him as he does the same for me. We can both feel that the other has wanted this for a very, very long time.
‘It feels damn good to be inside your mind, Sylvie,‘ he says in our newly established mind link.
‘It feels good having you here,‘ I say.
We make love for hours, laughing, kissing, and loving each. other. When it’s time for lunch, we finally drag ourselves downstairs, hand in hand. Everyone looks at us, obviously realizing that we missed breakfast.
I watch as everyone’s noses go up in the air.
“About fucking time,” Sebastian says, making me laugh.
“No shit,” Mia says.
I look over at Logan who nods at me, smiling, as if saying ‘good for you‘.
‘Thank you,‘ I mouth to him.
‘Anytime,‘ he mouths back before I’m pulled into a round of hugs and congratulations.
Lunch is one of the happiest meals I can ever remember having at the Academy. James keeps me on his lap the entire time, kissing me, touching me, and looking at me with so much love in his eyes.

all the next morning, we continue to seal our bond, marking each other again, making love over and over again until we finally fall into an exhausted and happy sleep.
