Chapter 8 Does He Know I’m Dead?
“Marcus, that man is so intimidating. He’s looking right at me.”
Bella trembled and moved to stand behind Marcus for protection.
I glanced over my shoulder and sighed in relief. The menacing man was not looking at me but at Bella.
He was glaring at Bella with intense fury, yet he said nothing.

“His name is Stephen, and he’s from the local orphanage. I once caught him stealing a loaf of bread but he’s not a bad guy.” one of the police officers defended him.
I shook my head vigorously, “No, he is a bad guy! He’s a murderer!”
The police decided to let Stephen go.
Stephen got up, his long legs making his pants look too short, exposing his ankles.
Ahorrifying scar on his calf caught my eye. It looked like a burn from an electric shock.
Despite my fears that he might be dangerous, I followed him, my nerves on edge.
As Stephen approached Bella, his voice came out raspy.
It sounded like a voice that was ruined.
“It’s you…
Bella stared at the man, her body shaking uncontrollably.
1, too, stared at Stephen in disbelief, wondering if he knew Bella had deliberately led me to him.
“Mr. Flynn, if you have any information about Madeline, please inform us immediately. Sorry for bothering you so late, the officer heading this investigation apologised. “I’m Zeke Palmer; here’s my contact information.”
Marcus grunted, took the business card, and left with Bella.
Watching Marcus walk away, Zeke mused aloud. “Keep an eye on Marcus and Bella. Their involvement with Madeline is not as simple as we think
“What makes you think that, Zeke?”
your sister has a mole on her chest or a birthmark near her pubic bone?”
“Do you know if yo
“What a pervert, remarked the young policeman, visibly shaken. “He looks human but acts like a beast.”
“So, let’s continue with the investigation!”
I decided not to go back with Marcus, preferring to avoid another encounter with him and Bella.
I followed Stephen instead, observing as he limped away, desperate to find where my body was hidden.
His injured leg, barely supporting him, dragged him to the gates of an old welfare home, where he slipped inside deftly.
I followed him, my breath heavy as I took in the surroundings.
This was the place.
The place where I had met my tragic end!
He had brought me here and then ended my life.

However, he bypassed the actual murder site and instead entered an old dormitory building, retreating to a small room where he curled up in a corner.
The room was cluttered and chaotic.
Clearly, he had been living there.
This was an old orphanage. I wandered its corridors thoroughly but could not find the basement where the murder that led to my death was committed.
No wonder it had eluded the authorities.
Suddenly, a “Bang!” echoed as a car forcefully struck the iron gate of the orphanage open.
Stephen cautiously pecked out, wary of the unexpected visitors.
I watched in astonishment as Marcus and a visibly shaken Bella stepped out of the vehicle.
“That’s the guy. I can’t say for sure if he’s the killer, but he’s been following me around lately.”
Bella confided in Marcus instead of alerting the police.
Marcus, in turn, decided against involving the authorities, opting to confront Stephen with his companions.
As Stephen attempted to flee, Marcus‘ group quickly closed in on him, brandishing sticks,
“You’re just a beggar, but you have your eyes on Bella? How audacious!”
“Yeah, that’s him. You’re not interested in Madeline, huh? Which beggar has such lofty standards?”
Cowering on the ground, Stephen shielded his head, seemingly accustomed to such assaults.
Marcus approached Stephen, squatting down to show him a photograph. “Have you seen this woman?”
At that moment, I could not help but wonder if Marcus harboured any suspicions that I was already dead.
