Chapter 29 Why Marcus Despises Me?
Marcus didn’t go home; instead, he headed towards Hardy Lane and Bronze Street.
I had no idea what he was planning, but I followed him aimlessly, step by step.

Perhaps I was just too eager to see his reaction when he finally knew the truth.
Would it be regret, relief, or an immediate rush to protect Bella?
“Marcus, did you ever have any feelings for me at all? What were you thinking while you were bullying me? Did you me even as you took advantage of me without any remorse?” I stood behind Marcus, asking repeatedly.

Even though I knew he couldn’t hear me. I still clung to the hope of an answer, a resolution.
“Marcus, we haven’t found any trace of Madeline. The police confirmed that we had indeed taken Madeline to Hardy Lane on the 13th and 14th, as we had confessed to doing. The police, however, informed us that the surveillance footage revealed Madeline’s presence on the 15th, when she went to Bronze Street. I watched the footage too. Madeline indeed came alone.”
Marcus’s close friends showed up and reported the findings.
I coldly watched the two of them, wondering if they were genuinely clueless or just putting on an act. On the day I disappeared. I heard their laughter and banter through my earpiece.
I distinctly heard them claim, “A woman like Madeline isn’t even worth a pervert’s attention.”
“What was she doing there alone on the 15th?” Marcus’s expression darkened as he looked around. “Did the surveillance camera capture her leaving?”
Vince Hines’s confidence wavered as he detailed, “The police focused on a cleaner who was seen dragging a large trash bin out during the time Madeline went missing. There was no sign of Madeline.”
He then asked quietly, “Marcus, could something really have happened to Madeline?”
Marcus’s face turned pale, and he started to panic. He denied, “Don’t talk nonsense. She’s not dead”
He took a step back and leaned against the wall.
I stood there watching Marcus, feeling a sense of sorrow.
Vince continued, “Tm not the only one who claims this, but a woman like Madeline would stop at nothing to achieve her goals. She had it coming. That woman was capable of pushing Bella down the stairs and poisoning her. The world is better off without someone like her!
Marcus’s friends had always disliked me. I knew this well. They all adored Bella.
The truth was, Bella might have convinced them to trust her, Marcus deliberate indulgence, on the other hand, was the root of their disrespect, mockery, bullying, and even abuse towards me.
Because Marcus despised me, they naturally despised me, too.
Marcus frowned. He looked at his friend with a dark, frightening gaze.
I remembered Vince well. He had tried to violate me in the Flynns‘ back garden, but I managed to fend him off and hit his head. After that, I fled in panic.
Later, Vince threatened me not to speak about what happened. He said no one would believe me, even if I did.
To ensure that no one would believe me, he began spreading rumours among Marcus’s friends, slandering and ruining me in an effort to protect himself.
He understood that discrediting me would turn his actions into just another lie, one that no one would believe.
And that’s exactly what happened.

Vince was a distant relative of Marcus. He had been around since I first moved in with the Flynns at the age of eighteen.
His mother was dissatisfied, and she said so to Bernice at the time. If you’re interested in adopting a child, Vince would be an excellent choice. If you want a daughter, I have one, too. Why take in an outsider’s child and not care for your own?”
At that time. I cowered behind Marcus, having just lost my parents, with no one I could trust. I was terrified.
“Don’t be afraid; ignore them. There’s something wrong with their minds,” Marcus said, holding my wrist and leading me to
room on the second floor.
“From now on, this is your home.”
1 quietly looked at Marcus. At that moment, my reliance and feelings for him reached their peak.
But everything shattered when he found the love letter I sent him.
All these years, I never understood why Marcus reacted so strongly and disdainfully towards me.
It was just the innocent affection of a young girl. Why did it lead to his years–long hatred towards me?
