Lucas suddenly added, “And keep a close watch on Tessa as well. Se’s cunning. Don’t let her slip away.”
Hearing that, the chief was a little surprised.
Was there really anything someone of Lucas‘ standing would be wary of?
But the chief could hear the emotion in Lucas’s tone when it came to Tessa.
Clearly, Lucas must’ve suffered a loss because of her before.
“Understood, Mr. Carter.”
After hearing Lucas‘ words, the chief started to feel a bit heavy–hearted.
He had thought this matter was almost wrapped up.
But now, after speaking with Lucas, he realized things weren’t as simple as he imagined.
In fact, some matters seemed to be just beginning.
Though mentally exhausted, the chief still didn’t skip a single responsibility.
He couldn’t just avoid doing things because he was scared.
That was never an option.
After thinking it through, his mood started to rise and fall again.
These past few days had truly worn him down.
If only they could send that disaster Julian away, or at least lock down a conviction, that would help.
Then he wouldn’t need to stay entangled in all this.
And on top of that, Lucas would owe him a favor.
In the future, no matter what trouble came his way, having Lucas‘ help would give him a major advantage.
With that in mind, the chief’s attitude shifted completely, becoming more flattering.
Seeing there was nothing more to say, Lucas hung up the call, a cold glint flashing through his eyes.
How amusing–Julian actually thought of pretending to be mentally ill?

Was that why he came up with such a tactic?
If that’s the case, Lucas was curious to see just how long Julian could keep up the act.
Not long after, the man returned to the room.
As soon as he walked in, Lucas noticed everyone staring at him wide–eyed.
It was as if he’d just gone out and done something unforgivable.
Lucas rubbed his nose. “What’s wrong?”
Aurora glanced at Megan and Leonard’s serious expressions.
With just one look, she understood–they must’ve misunderstood something.

Did they think Lucas stepping out to take a call meant he was treating her like an outsider?
Thinking that, Aurora shook her head. “It’s nothing. Don’t mind the two of them.
“By the way, do you want to head out to a restaurant later?”
She added sheepishly, “I feel bad making you stay here eating bland food with me all the time.”
But Megan was the first to object. “No way! Aurora, if you can eat this, why can’t we?”
Leonard nodded in agreement. “Eating something light once in a while is good for the digestive system too.”
“Exactly! I don’t want to be separated from you,“. Megan said, clinging tightly to Aurora’s arm. “Besides, the main reason I stayed is to take care of you.”
Aurora looked at Megan, who was leaning on her shoulder and acting all sweet, and couldn’t help but feel a bit helpless and amused.
Sometimes, she truly felt lucky to have such wonderful friends by her side.
