‘Send me the location. I’m heading over now.”
Without another word, Desmond shot the address to Lucas, including the exact hospital wing and room number.
Finally having a lead, the weight crushing Lucas‘ chest began to ease.
But the relief didn’t last long.
The moment he thought about Aurora suffering alone, in pain, his heart twisted all over again.
So that call she made–was it because her stomach had already started hurting?
The realization hit him like ice water.
In an instant, everything became painfully clear.
And with that clarity came a surge of rage.
If it hadn’t been for Wendy, he would’ve picked up that call.
None of this would’ve happened.
The fury he felt toward her hit a boiling point.
Behind the door, Wendy watched the scene unfold, fists clenched so tightly her nails dug into her palms.
Damn it. How was Aurora always this lucky?
All this time, and still nothing had gone wrong?
She had prayed that Aurora would die out there and never come back.
Grinding her teeth, Wendy hesitated for a moment, then stepped out of the house.
Lucas had already opened the car door, ready to leave without sparing her a glance.
But in a sudden, desperate move, Wendy threw herself in front of the car, arms outstretched.
Lucas instinctively slammed on the brakes.
His eyes darkened as he glared at her. “Are you trying to die?”
If she wanted to throw herself in front of a car, she could’ve picked any other car on the road, not his.
Wendy bit her lip, her eyes glassy with tears. “Lukey, I heard your call…”
“And?” he snapped.
There was no patience left in his voice–no warmth, no sympathy.
All Lucas could think about was getting to Aurora–being away from her all night, knowing she was sick with gastroenteritis, left him restless and on edge.
He had no idea how she was doing now.
Wendy, trying to compose herself, put on a serious face. “I’m worried about her too. If any of this is my fault, I should be there even more. I have a responsibility I can’t ignore.”
Lucas cast her a sideways glance. “Oh? So, you do know you’re responsible?”
Wendy pretended not to hear the sarcasm.
She lowered her head and said softly, “Lukey, I know you don’t like me right now. But that’s not important. What matters most
is finding her. Whatever’s going on between us… can we just set that aside for now?”
She gave him a shy, gentle smile–one that could’ve easily passed for a lovestruck girlfriend.
Her original plan had been to slowly insert herself into his life, nut clearly, that tactic wasn’t working.
Lucas didn’t even spare her a glance of kindness. “Did something Happen between us?”
The words hit her like a slap. She stood frozen for a beat, caught off guard by how ruthlessly he dismissed her.
Then she quickly tried the passenger–side door.
It was locked.
Lucas, already delayed by her sudden appearance, clenched his jaw furious that she was wasting more of his time.
“Lukey, open the door,” Wendy said with a forced cheerfulness. “You haven’t let me in yet.
Lucas’s gaze turned ice cold as he looked at her, like he was staring at prey, not a person.
“Who said you belonged in the front seat?”
Wendy instantly shut her mouth.
Without another word, she quietly climbed into the back.

As for the front’s seat, or anything that resembled a place of significance in his life, she could forget it.
Her hands clenched tightly in her lap as her eyes locked on the front passenger seat.
That spot belonged to Aurora now.
But if its current owner were to die, wouldn’t it become hers?
