Since the fire had broken out so suddenly, the police launched an investigation into the cause. In the meantime, Danny and I were relocated to a nearby hotel.
It had been a long, chaotic night. Fear and exhaustion finally caught up with Danny. At some point, he curled up in my arms and drifted into a deep sleep.
The results of the investigation came quickly. It was arson. Someone had been paid to do it,
and the one pulling strings was Francesca.

She only did it because she wanted me dead. That was how deeply she hated me.
The moment I told her that I was staying, she decided I didn’t deserve to stay alive.
Not long after, Francesca was taken in for questioning.
I couldn’t deny that I resented her. But the fact that Danny and I had made it out alive felt like the best ending I could’ve asked for.
I had assumed that Roderick would rush to Francesca’s defence and bail her out.
To my surprise, he made a public statement the very next morning. He was filing for
divorce.
And with that announcement came another revelation. He and Francesca had indeed been high school sweethearts. Yet, that love had long since faded.
Their marriage had been nothing more than a business arrangement. They had carefully crafted the image of a loving couple just to keep their stock prices climbing.
Facing the press, Roderick gave a sincere apology. “I’m sorry for hiding the truth all these years. I don’t love Francesca. The woman I truly love is someone else.”

As I watched the interview, I couldn’t help but let out a mocking laugh.
Six years ago, he and Francesca had thrown a lavish wedding. And every year, they’d celebrate their anniversary. But just like that, it was over.

When questioned by the police, Francesca confessed to the crime. She had tried to have me
killed, yet the plan failed.
Still, she didn’t think that she had done anything wrong and had no intention of apologizing to me.
I went to see her once. She no longer had her flawless makeup, and the designer jewelry that usually adorned her was gone. Now, she looked plain.
The moment Francesca saw me, her eyes flared with hatred.
“Savannah, you really are hard to kill, aren’t you? My biggest regret is not having someone stab you to death!” she yelled.
“Roderick was my first love. He did have feelings for me. You ruined everything! Even if he didn’t love me, he still married me. We were together for six years. This is all your fault!
“You shouldn’t have come back. If you’d just stayed away, I wouldn’t have done any of this. Everything happened because of you!
“You shameless woman! You fell for a man who could’ve been your uncle! And now,
Roderick’s fallen for you, too. Go to hell!”
Francesca had clearly lost her mind. Her face contorted with fury, but all I felt was sorrow.
As I turned to leave, I finally said something. “Francesca, what did any of this have to do with me? After everything you did, what did you even gain?”
She said nothing and simply let tears stream down her face.
With that, I walked out of the police station.

Over the last few years, my life felt like one long drama. If I could go back in time, I would
never have fallen in love with Roderick.
