Chapter 9
After Blake left, Lucas pulled up the video of him torturing Hannah at that casino.
His voice had this jealous undertone, like he was trying to be casual but wasn’t quite pulling it off.
“Charlotte, promise me you won’t fall for his bullshit. Guys like him are predators–they’ll destroy you and not think twice about it.”
I burst out laughing.
“We’re literally married! Why are you still freaking out about him? I’d rather be single forever than
touch that monster with a ten–foot pole.”
Lucas let out this huge sigh of relief and wrapped his arms around me.
He buried his face in my shoulder and mumbled:
“Okay, good. That’s what I needed to hear.”
The next day, everything hit the fan.
That casino torture video went everywhere–Twitter, Instagram, TikTok, the works.
The Harrison empire got completely obliterated. Feds seized everything.
Police found Hannah in some shitty motel, paralyzed from the waist down.
Blake got slapped with assault charges, sexual assault, human trafficking–the whole damn book.
When the cops hauled him away in handcuffs, his mom was having a total meltdown on the front
Jawn.
“What the hell did I do wrong? My whole life is over!”
She was clutching that baby, both of them crying their heads off.
I couldn’t care less about any of it.
Today was my actual wedding day with Lucas.

Chapter 9
He’d somehow transformed the entire venue into this dreamy pink garden with fairy lights covering the ceiling like stars.
I walked down the aisle through scattered rose petals, beaming as I reached for him.
When the pastor asked if we’d love each other forever, Lucas and I just looked at each other and grinned.
“Hell yes.”
Grandma and the Reed family were front row, looking like they’d won the lottery.
A few months after we got married, I was holding our newborn and asked Lucas something that had been bugging me.
“Why did you even want to marry me in the first place?”
He looked genuinely offended, like I’d insulted his mother or something.
“Are you kidding me? I’ve been obsessed with you since we were like twelve. How did you not
notice?”
I just stared at him.
“Uh… I had zero clue.”
Mrs. Reed cracked up and took the baby from me.
“Honey, of course you didn’t know. This kid was having daily meltdowns in seventh grade because
he wanted to ask you out. Your mom and I panicked and shipped you both off to different
continents.”
‘We were not ready to deal with middle school romance drama.”
Lucas shot his mom this betrayed look:
‘Mom, I almost lost her forever because of you.”
I laughed so hard I snorted, then threw myself at him.
‘Lost me? Baby, I was always gonna end up right here.”
