Chapter 6
I told Lucas what happened.
He showed up fast, dressed to the nines in this super formal outfit, carrying his birth certificate.
I blinked, totally confused.
Lucas handed me this gorgeous gift box, his face turning red.
“I had a dress custom–made for you. Put it on. We’re getting married today.”
I was stunned.
But Lucas took my hand, his voice almost seductive: “Charlotte, Blake doesn’t think you’re really
over him, right? Let’s make it official, get married properly. Then I can move in and protect you.
Makes sense, doesn’t it?”
It sounded reasonable enough, and that was the plan anyway.
But something felt weird about it.
Still, Lucas had a point.
We were already planning to get married. Getting the license now wasn’t that crazy.
I went to get the family registry from Grandma.
But she remembered what happened this morning and raised her cane to hit me.
“That man treated you like garbage! And you still want to marry him?”
“Are you even my granddaughter? He’s literally shitting on your face!”
I dodged the cane while trying to explain:
“Not him! I’m marrying Lucas!”
“Lucas?”

Grandma said his name quietly and lowered her cane.
She looked up like she was remembering something and sighed.
“The Reed boy…”
Grandma looked at me and suddenly smiled.
“If it’s him, that’s good. That’s really good.”
“He finally got what he wanted.”
Before I could ask what she meant, she stopped talking. Just opened the safe and handed me the registry.
“Go on. Be good to him.”
Lucas and I got our marriage license without any problems.
At the courthouse, he held both certificates, grinning like an idiot.
He immediately pulled out his phone and posted them on social media.
Caption: My wife for life.
I could feel how genuinely happy he was. It caught me off guard.
For a moment, I actually thought our marriage might be more than just a business arrangement.
He really did love me.
On the way home, I asked Lucas how he knew Grandma.
He squeezed my hand and smiled.
‘Charlotte, after you went abroad, I visited your grandma a lot. We got close.”
My gut told me there was more to it than that.
But before I could dig deeper, my phone rang.
Blake had gotten a new number to call me. His voice was furious.

“Charlotte, you actually went behind my back and married some other guy?”
I laughed coldly.
“You went behind my back to find a mistress and had her baby. I just got married. What’s the big
deal?”
That hit a nerve. He started cursing me out.
“Charlotte, don’t forget–most of your family’s contracts depend on working with my company.”
“Without me, Montgomery Industries can go bankrupt!”
He slammed the phone down.
I snorted.
Good thing he reminded me.
The Montgomery family needed to cut ties with his company anyway, or else…
When Lucas went after someone, he’d leave them with nothing but their underwear.
Lucas was practically a legend in the business world–our version of the Wolf of Wall Street.
He’d destroyed three companies overnight once. His methods were ruthless.
Though the news later reported that all three companies were involved in shady businesses.
Lucas basically did society a favor by taking out those cancers.
Thinking about that, I glanced at the man in the driver’s seat.
Perfectly tailored white suit, long powerful fingers on the steering wheel, sharp profile.
Gold–rimmed glasses that made him look even more distinguished.
He looked like he’d just won a war, totally pleased with himself.
“Gentleman psychopath,” I said without thinking.
Lucas’s lips curved into a smile.
