Chapter 4

He reached out his hand, voice filled with barely hidden concern.
“Charlotte, let me take you home.”
Back at the Reed house, looking at the familiar courtyard and the housekeeper I’d known for years, memories came flooding back.
Lucas’s mom and my mom had been best friends since childhood.
They’d arranged our engagement when we were just kids.
But back then I was always fighting with Mom, and I took it out on Aunt Reed and little Lucas too.
After middle school, I went to Milan to study art.
Lucas’s family sent him to England for business school.
More than ten years later, we saw each other again at Mom’s funeral.
Lost in thought, Mrs. Reed walked over with a bowl of ginger tea.
She pulled me into a worried hug.
“That son of mine! Letting you get soaked like that. I’m gonna give him hell later!”
“Mom?”
I was confused.
Lucas looked away awkwardly and cleared his throat.
“I’ll go get you some dry clothes.”
After Lucas left, Mrs. Reed smiled and handed me the tea.
“Lucas told us you two are getting married soon. You better start calling me Mom.”
“Oh honey, I’ve been waiting for this day forever! We’ll use the date your mother picked out before

she passed. No changes.”
The date Mom had chosen was next month.
It was supposed to be my wedding day with Blake.
The warm ginger tea slowly heated me from the inside.
I couldn’t help tearing up.
The next day, Lucas brought me everything we’d need for the wedding, laying it all out for me to
approve.
I figured with such short notice, I’d be scrambling to get everything ready, maybe even having to
reuse the plans from before.
But Lucas had thought of everything. I didn’t need to worry about a single detail.
You could tell how much this meant to him.
And Blake…
Five years together, and if I hadn’t pushed for marriage, he never would’ve bothered.
I had to handle every single wedding detail myself.
Love versus indifference–it was pretty obvious which was which.
Thinking about that, I called the wedding planning team and canceled everything.
A second later, Blake’s mom was calling me.
“Charlotte, did someone scramble your brains? How can you be so selfish, canceling the wedding just like that?”
“What did Blake do now to upset you? Can’t you just suck it up? A spoiled princess with such a terrible attitude–only my son would put up with you.”
Nobody in Blake’s family could stand me.
I used to think his mom was just tough on the outside but actually liked me deep down.

Until I heard what Blake really said about me at the maternity ward.
“Mrs. Harrison, Blake and I broke up. Obviously the wedding’s off.”
“Broke up? What did you do to make him mad this time? Just apologize! You’re a woman–if you
can’t even keep your husband happy, how are you gonna…”
I didn’t want to hear any more of her crap. Hung up on her.
The next day, Lucas and I went to try on wedding dresses.
He had to take a conference call halfway through, so I went ahead and started trying them on.
I put on the dress Lucas had specially flown in from Italy and stood in front of the mirror, smiling.
I heard movement behind me and turned around, grinning.
“How do I look?”
Something flashed in Blake’s eyes–like he was impressed despite himself.
My smile faded when I saw Hannah coming out of another dressing room.
Blake’s face went dark. He reached over and ripped the veil right off my head.
“Unbelievable! Charlotte, first you say no wedding, now you’re sneaking around trying on wedding dresses. Playing hard to get much?”
He was rough about it, yanking it off in one motion.
The bobby pin holding the veil scratched my face, drawing blood that dripped onto the million–dollar dress, staining it red.
I winced in pain.
“Blake, I’m not here for you!”
Hannah’s eyes immediately filled with fake tears as she stirred the pot.
“Charlotte, I didn’t want to marry Blake or anything. I just wanted to take some wedding photos to remember this time.”

Blake laughed coldly.

“Why are you even explaining yourself to someone like her? Charlotte, I used to think you were just
dramatic. I put up with it because I loved you. But I never thought you’d be this childish about our own wedding.”
“Fine! We don’t need this wedding anyway!”
Then he started trying to rip my dress off, wanting to throw me out of the shop.
I fought back as hard as I could.
Just as he grabbed my waist, about to strip my dress off in front of everyone-
Lucas showed up just in time, kicked Blake flat on his ass, and caught me around the waist.
“My wife’s trying on her wedding dress. You’re her pathetic ex–quit trying to make this about you.”
