He paused for a second, then said something that almost sounded thoughtful.
“Do yourself a favor. Keep your head down and stay out of the way.”
That’s when it clicked for Alice. She finally realized who he’d been talking about.
“You’re Boston Spencer’s assistant?”
The man frowned, clearly unimpressed. “You don’t recognize me?”

He thought this woman would’ve looked into who Boston kept close at hand if she was here for his help.
Even if she couldn’t get to Boston, getting on his assistant’s good side might’ve opened a few doors.
But the more he thought about it, the more he convinced himself she was playing dumb just to stir things

His stare turned sharp with disgust.
“I’ve been in this business long enough to see every kind of act. If you try anything funny, I’ll shut down. your clown act right away.”
Alice had heard enough. She raised her hand and made a time–out sign.
“Okay, seriously–what exactly did I do to piss Boston off?”
The assistant rolled his eyes. He was done with the conversation.
“Sort out your Nolan drama on your own. Don’t bring that crap here again.”
That told her everything.
Ah, the Levi incident.
“Then you’ve got the wrong girl. I don’t want anything to do with it. Now move. My coffee’s getting cold thanks to you wasting my time.”
She brushed past him, coffee in hand, and closed the door behind her without a second glance.
The assistant stood there, stunned.
He was Boston’s longtime assistant. Even when the spotlight was on someone else during Boston’s early career, having the Spencer name still gave him power.
People never shut the door in his face.
Until now.
He scoffed under his breath. “Country girl. Of course decorum goes over her head.”
Still, maybe this wasn’t so bad.

If she wanted to play tough, she could forget about ever meeting Boston again.
Inside the booth, Alice dropped into her seat with a sigh.
Eric had heard everything.
He chuckled under his breath.
“Did they just treat you like some broke cousin no one invited to the party?”

Alice rolled her eyes. “Mr. Eric, if you keep that kind of talk up, you’re going to single–handedly solve global warming. Probably plunge us right into the next Ice Age, too.”
Eric smirked. “So you’re saying my mouth has superpowers? You’ve … tested them yourself?”
Alice blinked.
“Nope, not yet.”
Then she leaned closer and gave him a straight face. “But maybe I should. If your mouth does have some sort of superpower, I can probably start an agency and charge handsomely for my … I mean our services.”
Eric didn’t
say a word.
He just stared at her.
There was something in his eyes–dark and heavy, like something he didn’t want to say out loud.
Alice touched her cheek, confused.
“Did that guy outside smear something on my face?”
Eric finally looked away, slow and quiet.
Then something clicked for Alice.
She let out a sudden laugh.
“Mr. Eric, be honest–you were wondering if I meant testing your ‘superpower‘ with myouth or my face, weren’t you?”
Eric gave
her a look like she was talking nonsense, but the tips of his ears were burning red.
Alice sipped her coffee slowly, then wiped the corner of her mouth with a napkin.
“You really need to catch up with the times. They’ve probably got actual tools for that now.”
She gave a light shrug. “And I’m not a power reader. I can’t give you a reading.”
Eric’s face tightened just a little.
“Drink your coffee.”
Alice nodded, all calm and serious. “But if you ever do want to run a test, just let me know.

At the same time, Linda showed up.
She’d heard Boston was filming nearby, so she decided to swing by and see for herself.
As soon as the assistant got the message, he moved fast. He had someone bring her straight to Boston’s private room.
“Linda.”
Boston lit up the second he saw her.
He waved her over with a grin and told the assistant to order the best coffee in the place.
“Boston, I wasn’t sure if you were really here. I was just trying my luck. Can’t believe I actually found you.”
The assistant, full of charm, jumped in.
“Ms. Linda, you could’ve just called. No matter how busy Boston is, he’ll always make time for you.”
And that wasn’t just talk.
Everyone knew–when it came to Boston, Linda came first. Always.
The assistant would kiss the soles of her shoes if she wanted him to.
The last assistant got fired for serving her coffee that wasn’t the right temperature.
Boston’s sister complex? Untouchable.
Linda gave a soft, modest smile.
“I didn’t come for anything special. I just missed you, Boston. I thought I’d drop by. I’d never want to mess with your schedule.”
Boston’s face relaxed. His mood clearly lifted.
“You always know how to warm my heart.”
The tone made it clear–it was a jab, and Linda picked up on it instantly.
“Did someone piss you off?”
Boston didn’t say a word about Alice.-
