Chapter 59 Alice’s Fault 

Ruby wiped her eyes, even though there were no tears.

“It’s just… now that Eric has some leverage, I’m scared I’ll lose control in the company.” 

Peter jumped in quickly, “I know some big players who’d really want to work with you.” 

Ruby shook her head fast. 

“The auction house stuff’s already caused you enough trouble. I don’t want to trouble you 

more 

“That’s not it,” Peter said, worried she’d feel bad. “They want to work with you because they can see how capable you are.” 

Ruby held back a sob. 

“I’m sorry I dragged you into this.” 

Suddenly, Peter went quiet.  

 

The night dragged on, and the moon hung bright in the sky. 

Two people stood face to face. 

Their shadows overlapped, but they felt miles apart. 

There was a long pause before Peter, full, of regret, said, “I wronged you. I owe you for all of this.” 

He stepped back. 

“You should get going soon. If you stay too long. Sandy might start getting suspicious.” 

Ruby sobbed quietly twice, “I want to watch you leave first.” 

Peter instantly thought back to their college days. 

After dates, they always each other off like this.

As Ruby watched him disappear around the corner, all the bitterness, struggles, and pain on her face faded.

Only coldness stayed. 

She carried the heart pendant into Sandy’s room. 

Earlier, Sandy had seen Ruby meeting Peter upstairs. 

If it were before, she might have thrown some sarcastic comments. 

But now, she had no right because Ruby was doing it to cover for her. 

“Mom, I-” 

Slap! 

Ruby didn’t let her finish and slapped both her cheeks hard. 

“Ah!” 

Sandy held her face, staring at Ruby in shock 

It was the first time she’d ever been hit. 

Tears poured down right away. 

Ruby tossed the heart pendant onto the nearby sofa, her face darkening. 

“If it happens again, deal with it yourself!” 

Then she turned and left. 

After the slap, Sandy’s thought of apologizing disappeared. 

Besides, getting smacked over a little heart pendant didn’t feel right. 

She quickly fired back. “What’s your deal with that Peter? 

“The auction house has always been a mystery. He runs it, but he’s always been good to me, helping me with the auction items.” 

She stepped closer, voice sharp, 

“You do all this behind Dad’s back, then have the nerve to hit me?” 

Every word was full of malice. 

Ruby trembled, hurt deeply by her daughter’s harsh tone.

Chapter 59 Alice’s Fault 

She turned, staring at Sandy in disbelief. 

Sandy was born premature, fragile, and pitiful. 

Ruby had poured almost all her love into this daughter. 

Because of Sandy, she nearly lost control of the Nolans and almost got kicked out. 

Now, this daughter she loved so much doubted her and questioned her! 

Sandy was worse than ungrateful. 

“Why aren’t you saying anything?” 

Sandy saw Ruby’s face go pale, her eyes cold and fierce, and felt a little scared. 

She already regretted acting out. 

But Ruby suddenly turned and walked away, as if the slap never happened. 

Sandy looked down at the heart pendant box on the sofa, feeling guilty. 

Have I really crossed the line? 

But I saw it myself. Peter’s feelings for Mom aren’t normal. 

And after all these years of Dad being sick, she couldn’t have stayed loyal and bore the loneliness. 

She can understand, maybe even accept it. 

So why was I so harsh just now, hurting her heart? 

She picked up the heart pendant again, hatred flashing in her eyes… 

It’s all Alice’s fault!

The next day, Monday, Alice couldn’t sleep in and looked even more tired.

Alice’s mentor had taught her never to waste food.

Eric didn’t have it so good. 

The best portions went to Alice; Eric had to settle for whatever she left. 

Of course, she didn’t feel sorry for him. 

Plus, Eric had been doing needle therapy and healing baths lately, so he needed lighter food.
