“What are you here?”
Alice walked over casually and took the hairdryer from his hand..
Eric said calmly, “Last time you took a shower, you asked me to blow–dry your hair.”
Alice blinked. “Wait, what? I did?”
She doesn’t remember any of that.
“So you think it’s okay to take advantage of me just because I’m less educated?” she teased.

Eric raised an eyebrow. “You told me patients should follow medical advice without question. I’m just following your order.”
Alice opened her mouth, then shut it. That did sound like something she’d say.
But she didn’t remember any of it.
Still, she felt a little cheated.
Moments where she could boss Eric around were rare–especially for something as patience–testing as blow–drying hair.
Suddenly, she flashed a brilliant smile and tossed the dryer back at him.
“I need to test your wrist strength. You can start by blow–drying my hair.”
A trace of helplessness flickered across Eric’s face. “You could’ve just asked.”
“Alice pressed a hand to her heart, sincere and wide–eyed. “Now, now, don’t overthink it. I’m a kind- hearted doctor, and we have the most professional, strictly platonic doctor–patient relationship. Would I really use my position for personal gain?”
Eric gave her a long look; no word came out from him.
After a moment, he waved her over.
“Come here,” he said.
“What for?”
He pointed at the seat in front of him. “Sit down.”
She was surprised. “You’re really doing it?”
He replied dryly, “What did you think? I’ll let you threaten to withhold treatment again.”
That made Alice laugh. She settled down on the edge of the bed, her back to him.
Eric gently took a strand of her hair and switched on the dryer.

The breeze was gentle.
The warm air brushed against his hand before fanning softly over her hair.
Her hair was smooth and fine, slipping like silk across his palm.
It tickled–but in a way he couldn’t scratch it.
The sensation crawled from his palm, up his arm, and settled somewhere in his chest.
There was a light floral scent–orchid, maybe—from her shampoo.
Subtle but lasting, the scent lingered in the air and softened the mood, wrapping itself around his nose like a warm cloud.
The scent seemed to soothe the itch, curling around her heart like a gentle shield.
“Mr. Eric?”
“Hm?”
She said darkly, “My hair’s starting to smell burnt.”
That snapped him out of it.
Startled, he let go of the dry–yet still soft–strand of hair and quickly picked up another one.
The hairdryer was nearly silent, but somehow the sound filled the room..
Every pass of air over her hair felt louder than it should’ve.
Each strand twined around his fingers, brushing his knuckles, sliding into his palm like the smoothest satin.
He hadn’t realized women’s hair could be so interesting.
“Mr. Eric.”
He snapped out of his trance. “Yeah?”
“My back’s practically roasting.”
“… Right.”
Her hair was completely dry, but he hadn’t even noticed.
Alice grabbed the dryer back and turned it off, giving him a look full of mock betrayal.
“Mr. Eric, lying isn’t good for a patient.”
Eric took a moment before realizing what she meant–the time he claimed she’d asked him to dry her
hair.
But he had done it, hadn’t he?

He just didn’t think much of it back then.
A little frustrated, he turned and walked over to the junior bed.
Alice stared after him, surprised.
Seriously? How petty could a grown man be?
Is he sulking?
That bed was barely six feet long and barely five feet wide.
It looked small for someone of his size.
She cleared her throat. “Ahem. Excuse me? That’s my bed.”
But Eric didn’t budge. Instead, he sat down and pulled back the cartoon–print blanket Alice had picked out for herself.
He lay down and pulled it over him.
Since the blanket was custom–made for Alice, it didn’t quite fit Eric.
When he pulled it over himself, his feet stuck out.
If he covered his feet, it barely reached his chest.
It was awkward.

Alice sighed and rubbed her forehead. “Are you done yet? Can you get off now?”
Eric didn’t answer.
He just tugged the blanket up a little more in stubborn silence.
Alice stared at him.
What is he doing? Seriously? Was he being rebellious now?
“Hey, what are you trying to do exactly?”
He paused for a few seconds before finally replying in a low voice, “See things from the doctor perspective and strengthen the doctor–patient relationship.”
Alice blinked. That took her a moment to process.
She finally gets it after sometime.
Impressive! Is he doing this because he thought she was mad because she accused him of lying
Was this his way of demanding her to coax him?

Eric didn’t seem like someone who’d go out of his way to comfort anyone.
She must be overthinking it.
Whatever he said was probably exactly what he meant–nothing more.
So instead of arguing, she flopped onto the big bed.

There was space to roll around, and the mattress was soft and springy in all the right ways.
