Chapter 134 Checkmate
Scott had done everything he could.
“Gary, can’t you just-”
“No,” Gary said, his voice low but firm.
There was no room for negotiation.
Alright. I’ll see what else I can do.”
Scott sighed and hung up.
Matt and Josh were still waiting nearby, watching him for an answer.
He had no idea how to break the news, but he had to say something.
“Mrs. Nolan, Mr. Nolan.”
He approached them with a calm expression and spoke in a polite voice.
“Would you mind giving me a little more time? I’ll try to find another solution.”
That alone made it clear: Gary wasn’t going to help.
But Alice’s holding period was about to end.
The second Irene “woke up“, it wouldn’t be a holding anymore–it’d be full–on jail time.
“Mr. Scott,” Cheryl said coldly, her arms crossed and her voice clipped. “Can you really get us what we asked for?”
Her expression was full of disdain now.
“You called your brother, didn’t you? So you must know how impossible this is.”
Of course, Scott knew. That was why he looked so defeated.
He couldn’t blame Gary. He couldn’t save his Alice.
His heart felt like it was twisted into knots.
“I’m sorry,” he said. “I just need a little more time to work something out.”
He humbled himself completely, swallowing his pride.
Cheryl sneered. “You might carry the Spencer name, but everyone knows you’ve got nothing going for you besides racing. No side business, no real power.”
To put it bluntly, she was calling Scott useless.
But even humiliated, Scott stayed composed.

“Please. Just give me three hours.”
Josh was about to say something when he saw two officers walking toward them.

“Looks like they’re here to take statements,” he said casually, stepping up to meet them with a friendly smile.
“Hi, I’m Josh.”
The officer gave him a nod. “You’re exactly who we’re looking for.”
Josh’s smirk twisted slightly as he glanced at Scott.
“Looks like time’s up, Mr. Scott.”
Scott’s fists clenched at his sides.
“I-”
The officer cut in, “Mr. Nolan, you’ll need to come with us to answer some questions.”
Josh blinked. “Questions? About what?”
“You’re suspected of being involved in several criminal offenses,” the officer replied as he pulled out his badge.
Josh looked stunned, like his brain had just hit a wall.
Then, another officer turned to Cheryl and said almost the same thing. Cheryl was also needed for questioning.
Her expression darkened. “What do you mean? How could I be involved in a criminal case?”
“We’ll need to investigate that,” the officer said stiffly. “We’d appreciate your cooperation.”
She opened her mouth to argue, but faced with the official paperwork, she had no choice but to grit her teeth and stay quiet.
The police approached Matt and Sidney too.
They were taking everyone.
At this point, Scott couldn’t even get close to them, let alone discuss anything further.
Irene, who’d been pretending to be unconscious, suddenly sat bolt upright when she heard the news.
“What are you doing?” she snapped.
The officers looked at her with surprise.
“You’re awake? Great. Then let’s take your statement.”
Her expression turned grim.

“I have a headache.”
“No problem,” the officer replied. “We’ll have a doctor on standby.”
He picked up his phone and made a quick call.
“The doctor will check you out first. If everything looks good, we’ll start the statement.”
Irene nearly choked.
“Can I ask what’s going on? What exactly did my son and daughter–in–law do?”
The officer shook his head. “Sorry, ma’am. It’s part of an ongoing investigation. We can’t disclose any details.”
Irene had always considered herself a woman of influence.
But the way she was being treated now sent a chill through her bones.
Had something happened that couldn’t be undone?
And so quickly?
Her mind raced, and eventually, all her suspicions landed on one name–Eric.
She’d fought her way through the business world. Time had dulled her edge, but she hadn’t lost her instincts.
She wasn’t senile. She wasn’t stupid.
From the beginning, Alice had this planned.
She didn’t know how Alice convinced Levi to turn against them, but just when both she and Ruby were panicking, Alice made her move–swooping in and stealing him away.
She had calculated that they’d try to use the board members to pressure Eric and turned the whole thing around.
That shareholder who stood up and exposed them? He was probably bought off in advance.
It was a warning shot–one meant to make sure everyone else stayed in line.
As for her–an old woman pretending to sleep–she’d lost all authority. No one listened to her anym
Just like back at the old mansion, she had no choice but to fake illness and stall for time.
And Alice, that so–called “country bumpkin“, had played the fool just well enough to snatch the company seal right out from under her nose.
