Chapter 20
Everyone nodded, promising not to breathe a word.
Once that was settled, Reginald stood up and turned to
Adelaide. “They’re a bit hyper. Get used to it. But don’t go too wild with them either.”
Adelaide nodded. “Got it, Mr. Thorton.”
Without doubt, as soon as Reginald left, everyone swarmed around her, surrounding her in the middle and taking turns to introduce themselves. After the introductions, they realized Adelaide was the youngest.
But in terms of skills, she was far from it.
After all, the architectural awards she had won as Alicia were the most prestigious in the industry. With that identity, she could have walked into any opportunity. But after some thought, she decided working under Reginald was more advantageous, and she didn’t plan to rely on her identity as
Alicia.
For now, she wanted to keep that identity hidden.
In just one morning, Adelaide quickly got the hang of the team’s workflow and learned about the five architectural design
projects they were handling.
At noon, before she could respond to her colleagues‘ enthusiastic lunch invites, Teresa called.
She answered right away, “Hey, Tess.”
“Adele, I didn’t do it!” Teresa shouted from the other end.
Adelaide’s face darkened. The next second, Garrett’s voice came through the phone. “Adele, where are you? Why won’t you answer my calls? Do you know I’ve been going crazy looking for you?”
His voice was hoarse. He sounded so desperate that it seemed like he wanted to jump out of the phone.
Adelaide stayed calm. “I’m heading back to my apartment now.”
Garrett happily agreed, “Great, I’ll head over now. You probably haven’t had lunch yet, right? I’ll pick up some groceries and cook for you!”
Adelaide hung up and apologized to her colleagues, “Sorry, everyone. Something came up suddenly. I can’t join you for lunch. I’ll treat you another time, okay?”
Everyone gave a knowing smile and waved goodbye to
Adelaide.
Forty minutes later, Adelaide got back to her apartment.
She opened the door, and the smell of food filled the air.
Without even changing out of her slippers, she dropped her handbag and sat at the dining table.
Hearing the noise, Garrett strode out of the kitchen, wearing an
apron and holding a spatula. Seeing Adelaide, he beamed,
“Honey, wash your hands. Dinner will be ready soon.”
Adelaide said, “I’m not here to eat with you. Turn off the stove. We need to talk!”
Garrett’s heart sank, but he turned off the stove and sat down across from her.
Before Adelaide could say anything, he began, “I figured it out yesterday. She tried to kill herself again, and you were just trying to take the knife from her when you accidentally pushed her. Honey, I’m sorry that I jumped to conclusions.”
“It was my fault for misunderstanding you. I promise it won’t happen again,” he said, his eyes turning red. “Do you know how scared I was when you suddenly disappeared last night? I
searched everywhere for you, but I couldn’t find you. I didn’t
know what to do.
“Honey, if you’re mad, just vent your anger on me. But please
don’t disappear like that again. It really scares me.”
Chapter 20
In his eyes, she just threw a tantrum and disappeared. He didn’t
realize how serious this really was.
Garrett received no reaction from his wife, and his heart
skipped a beat. “Honey?”
Adelaide stared at him. “Garrett, I want a divorce.”
“Divorce?” Garrett’s voice instantly sharpened.
“Honey, is it really that serious? About what happened last night, your parents and brother all misunderstood. Why are you only angry at me and even talking about divorce?”
