‘She’s gone!
Lydia’s words echoed in his head, blocking out every chain of thought, every sound, every breath. Avery was gone? How was that even-
He didn’t waste any more time. He bolted right out of the hall, moving faster than anyone could predict. The warriors rushed behind him, none of them able to keep up.
His wolf was raging, clawing at his sides, desperate to be freed.
It wanted blood.
In seconds, Cain reached Avery’s room. He halted in his steps, right outside her door, the two guards that were stationed there were dead.
A muscle in his jaw ticked violently. Their bodies were slumped against the walls, their heads tilted at unnatural angles, their weapons still sheathed.
They hadn’t even put up a fight.
Cain’s vision blurred with rage. His heart pounded against his ribs. He pushed past the bodies and threw open the doors. The moment he stepped inside, his blood ran cold.
The room was destroyed.
The vanity was overturned, shattered glass littering the floor. The bed was a mess, the sheets tangled and half–pulled to the floor. A chair lay broken in the corner, its wooden legs splintered.
She had fought. She fought so hard and he didn’t even know it. How was this possible? How didn’t she call out for him? How didn’t he feel it? She was in danger and he didn’t even know it.
Cain’s fingers curled into fists, his nails digging into his palms, drawing out blood but he didn’t even realize it.
He stepped in slowly, his gaze flickering through it all. He could picture it, the way she fought against her attacker or attackers.
Why? Why didn’t she call out to him? Why didn’t he save her?

Just as he turned, his gaze caught something. A white handkerchief. It lay discarded near the bed, almost too insignificant to notice. But Cain noticed everything.
He crouched, picking it up. The moment he brought it to his nose, he snarled furiously.
A potion. A sedative too strong and only for wolves. That’s why he hadn’t felt her through the bond. They’d drugged her.
His entire body went rigid. His wolf howled in his mind, the sound so vicious it nearly split his skull.
In one sharp, explosive movement, he turned and slammed his fist into the wall. The force split the stone. Jagged fractures ripped through the wall, pieces of rock crumbling to the floor.
Cain didn’t stop, slamming his fist against the wall until it cracked.
Lydia had now rushed into the room, her breath caught in her throat, eyes wide with fear. She’d never seen Cain act like this. Be like this. Her gaze flickered through the room and she felt bile rise up her throat.
The fear Avery must’ve felt. She fought so hard.
She took a step forward just at the same time Cain slammed his fist through the wall yet again, the crack getting deeper.
“A–Alpha,” she stammered.
He paused, turning to look at her. His entire hand was filled with blood yet it was like he couldn’t feel it. He took a slow menacing step toward her, eyes asrk as the soul of the devil.
“I want every single warrior on this, now,” his voice was deep and guttural. “I don’t care what it takes. I don’t care if you have to tear apart the entire region. Find. Her. Lock down the entire pack. No one gets in or out.”
“Yes, Alpha,” Lydia breathed out. She turned to leave only to be stopped by Nathan and Xander who rushed in.
“Done, Alpha. The pack has been locked down. No one is allowed in or out of the pack. The warriors have been deployed to search for her. We will find her, Alpha.”

Cain didn’t respond, he turned around, dragging his hand over his face.
He needed blood.
He needed bodies.
He needed vengeance.
Whoever took her… whoever dared touch what was his… They were already dead. They just didn’t know it yet.
His head turned slowly, eyes burning with rage.
“Who was on patrol?”
At first there was silence, then a warrior stepped forward. His face was deathly pale. “Alpha–w–we didn’t hear anything-”
Cain was on him in an instant.
His hand wrapped around the man’s throat and lifted him off the ground.
The warrior gasped, his feet dangling, his hands flying to Cain’s wrist but Cain’s grip tightened.
“You didn’t hear anything?” Cain’s voice was quiet. Too quiet. “While my mate was being taken?”
The warrior struggled, his red eyes bulging. “Alpha-”
Cain’s fingers tightened further. “Alpha, please.” The warrior trembled, suddenly he urinated all over himself.
Cain’s lip curled in disgust.
Pathetic.
His grip tightened, cutting off whatever weak plea the man had left in him. The scent of piss filled the air, but Cain barely noticed. He wanted blood.
He wanted answers.
His mate had been stolen. Drugged. Taken right from under his nose. And this was the best his warriors could offer?

Cowards. Useless cowards.
The warrior gurgled, his face turning a dangerous shade of purple. His fingers clawed weakly at Cain’s wrist, but the Alpha didn’t yield. If anything, his grip only hardened, crushing the man’s windpipe inch by inch.
“Where were you? Why would you assign two weak fuckers to guard my mate? Two inexperienced idiots.”
The warrior’s lips parted, but no words came. Just a choked, garbled sound. His eyes rolled back. “O–only did what the head warrior instructed.” He managed to say.
Cain’s fingers flexed at the mention of the head warrior. “Callum?” He released the warrior, letting him drop to the floor.
The man gasped desperately, clutching at his throat. “Did Callum instruct you to assign these two here? To guard Avery?” He asked and the man nodded frantically.
“He made a change of routine early this morning and changed all of our positions. I swear, Alpha, we only did as he ordered.”
Cain didn’t say a word, he crouched low beside him. “If anything happens to Avery,” he murmured, his voice like death itself, “You will not live to tell this tale.”
The warrior whimpered.
Cain stood, he turned toward Lydia and Xander.
“Get Callum here right this instant.”
The warriors outside immediately ran off to do as they were ordered. Two minutes later, they returned…
“Where is he?” Cain snarled.
“A–A–Alpha… The head warrior has disappeared. No one can find him.”
