Avery looked around the room. She had already cleaned it up and even made sure to clean the bathrooms, even though they were already clean. She just didn’t know what to do with her new living situation.
She rubbed her hands together idly, unsure of what to do with herself in this unfamiliar new life. The silence weighed on her–no tasks, no orders, just… space. Glancing at the time, her stomach tightened. She was already late for her usual chores. “You’re not a servant anymore,” Lydia’s voice echoed in her head, but the habit, the need to move, to be useful, was hard to silence. Almost without thinking, Avery reached for the cleaning supplies tucked neatly under the bathroom sink. She was ready to lose herself in the comfort of routine when the door creaked open.
Lydia stepped in with a bright smile on her face. Her gaze fell on the cleaning supplies Avery held, and she frowned, her eyebrows arched.
“What do you think you’re doing?”
Avery froze, clutching the bottle of cleaner like a shield. “I–I just thought I should… I mean, I thought that since I am not doing anything, I could maybe clean?”
Lydia looked at her with a deadpan expression, shut the door behind her, and stepped forward. “Avery, No. You are not a maid anymore, and you don’t need to clean.” She said as she collected the supplies from Avery.
“But I-”
“But nothing. You’re Cain’s mate, not a servant. That means you’re not here to scrub floors or clean.” She sighed, shaking her head as she pulled Avery towards the bed. “Come on, I brought you something.”
She held out a bag and passed it to Avery, who took it confusedly. She looked inside to see a couple of clothes inside the bag.
“What is this?”
“Clothes, Avery. They are clothes, and they are for you.” Lydia replied, dipping her

hand into the bag and pulling out a gown.
Avery’s eyes widened when she saw it. She wasn’t really afforded the luxury of wearing dresses like this; she’d mostly seen them on Jasmine’s body and Kendra’s, and as much as she’d admired how perfectly fitted they looked on them, she didn’t see herself wearing one. Well, not until now.
Avery looked at the dress, her lip caught between her teeth. “Lydia, are you sure?” She
asked.
“Sure about you wearing a dress? Yes, I am. Now go put it on. You don’t have much time.” Lydia replied and practically shoved Avery into the closet.
Inside the closet, Avery stared at the dress. It was a simple, sleeveless bodycon gown with a smooth fabric that hugged every curve, a low neckline, and a hem that stopped mid–thigh.
The moment she faced the mirror, her breath hitched. The gown clung to her frame perfectly like a second skin, highlighting her curves. Her hair, still streaked with white from the shift, fell softly around her face, and her bright, hazel eyes–now tinged with a in a way they never had before.. strange glow–looked alive in strange glow–looked alive
A gentle knock sounded before Lydia’s voice called out, “Avery, come on, let me see.”
Avery stepped out of the closet, her lips palmed into a thin line. She looked up at Lydia nervously. Lydia’s eyes lit up the moment she saw her. “Avery, you look beautiful.” She walked over and smoothed a strand of Avery’s hair behind her ear. “Now, let’s go. You’re joining us for breakfast.”
Avery’s heart stopped. “Breakfast? With… with Cain?”
“Yes. With Cain. He asked that I bring you to breakfast.” Lydia said as she grabbed her wrist and tugged her towards the door.
“He did?” Avery asked, slightly alarmed and more nervous.
“He did.” Lydia replied as they walked down the hall. Avery’s heart pounded hard in her chest at the thought of having breakfast. It truly was hilarious considering she’d spent her heat and his rut with him, and yet she was this nervous to have breakfast.
Her pulse pounded in her ears as they neared the dining room. She could already hear the low murmur of voices–Cain, Nathan, and Callum, deep in conversation.

Soon they arrived at the dining room. The heavy doors opened, revealing the long table where Cain sat at the head, with Nathan and Callum beside him. The moment Avery stepped into the room, Cain’s gaze snapped toward her–and everything else seemed
to still.
His eyes devoured every inch of her, unmoving, as if seeing her for the first time. His gaze froze, dark and intense, trailing over every inch of her. He didn’t speak. Didn’t blink. Just stared.
Avery’s breath hitched under his scrutiny, her skin prickling with awareness.
Lydia cleared her throat loudly, snapping him out of it. Cain blinked and looked away, jaw tightening as he shifted in his seat.
Avery took a shaky breath and sat down, avoiding his gaze. Avery sat cautiously, her hands folded tightly in her lap as she focused on anything but him. The silence stretched painfully around her, thick and suffocating. It was almost like no one dared to speak. Everyone stayed silent as though they were waiting for Cain to speak. Yet, all Cain did was stare at her.
She didn’t need to look up to feel it–it was there, hot and searing against her skin, like a brand. Her pulse quickened with every passing second.
Goosebumps broke out along her arms, her breath catching in her throat as she tried to calm herself. Don’t look at him. Don’t look at him.
But it didn’t matter. His gaze was intense, dragging her into awareness of every inch of herself–the way the gown clung to her body, the heat rising in her cheeks, the rapid beat of her heart.
And then, finally, his voice cut through the thick silence–low, rough, and impossibly deep.
“Did you sleep well?”
“I… Yes,” she managed, her voice soft.
Instead of him looking away, his gaze pinned her down, heavy with something she couldn’t place.
Panic engulfed her instantly. Was he really inside the room? Was it real? Did it actually happen?
