Avery sat on the edge of Cain’s bed, her hands curled In her lap as she watched him roll up his sleeves. His movements were precise, controlled, yet there was tension in his shoulders.
A soft knock at the door broke the silence.
Cain barely acknowledged it. “Come in.”
Selena stepped inside, carrying a small tray of medical supplies. Her eyes flickered to Avery before landing on Cain, her expression unreadable.
“Alpha, the healing kit you requested for,” Selena said, standing still with the tray in her hands.
Cain nodded, then reached for the tray, picking up a small cotton pad and soaking it in

“Sit still,” he ordered.
She obeyed without question, though she couldn’t help the way her body stiffened when he touched her. His fingers were firm but careful as he dabbed at the cut on her cheek. The sting was sharp, and she flinched, a small gasp slipping past her lips before she could stop it.
Cain paused.
His jaw tightened, and for a split second, something dark flickered across his face. He didn’t say anything–just inhaled slowly before resuming what he was doing, this time with a touch more gentleness.
Avery swallowed, shifting slightly. “Alpha, I-”
“Be quiet, he murmured, his tone leaving no room for argument.
She frowned, watching him carefully. His expression was unreadable.
She tried again. “Cain, I don’t need this. I have my wolf now–I can heal faster.”

He didn’t respond.
Didn’t even look at her.
He just kept working, the tension in his shoulders growing more pronounced with each passing second.
Avery sighed softly, realizing he wasn’t going to listen. So, instead of arguing, she did something else.
She reached out, her fingers barely brushing his forearm.
Cain stilled.
For the first time since he started treating her, he finally looked at her.
Their eyes met–his stormy green eyes locking onto hers, something unreadable flashing in his orbs. She wasn’t sure what he was searching for, but whatever it was, he found it.
“I’m okay,” she said softly, her voice barely above a whisper.
His eyes flickered, his grip on the cotton pad tightening before he slowly exhaled. His gaze dropped to her lips for a brief moment before he finally relaxed and set the pad down on the tray.
He didn’t move away, though.
Instead, his fingers brushed against her jaw, tilting her face slightly as if making sure she was really okay. The touch was brief and yet, it sent warmth spreading through her
chest.
A knock at the door jolted them out of their reverie. Cain stepped back and looked at the door. “Come in.”
Lydia stepped into the room, her gaze flickering about from Cain to Avery to Selena and back to Cain.
“Yes, Lydia?”
Lydia bowed slightly. “I thought we could continue the meeting, Alpha? We left off rather abruptly.” She said, and he hummed. It was abrupt considering what Cain had felt and that too it was an important meeting.

Cain nodded, he glanced at Avery again, almost like he was making sure she was alright.
“Stay here tonight,” he said to her and then walked out of the room. Lydia flashed at quick smile at Avery before rushing off after him.
Avery sat still, his words echoing in her head. ‘Stay here tonight. She was still trying to wrap her head around what had happened at the cables and now this?
“Stay here tonight? Alpha Cain’s smitten by you, Avery,” Selena blurted out, drawing Avery out of her thoughts. She’d forgotten the other was still there.
Avery’s face burned a bright red. “Selena… You have to stop.”
Selena rolled her eyes. “You can be so conservative, you know. Anyways, I’ll get you something to eat.” She turned to leave.
Avery furrowed her eyebrows, “what? No! I’ll just-”
“Please sit still. They were clear orders from the alpha. You should stay here tonight, and I should get you food.” Selena winked at her before walking off, leaving Avery to herself.
Lydia walked beside Cain, going at the fast pace that he was. She glanced at him, seeing his jaw locked hard and even though she knew how fast his mood could change, she still wanted to know.
“What will you do with Kendra?” she finally asked, her voice calm.
Cain didn’t pause, didn’t even glance her way. “Leave her there.”
Lydia’s brows lifted slightly. She had expected something different. Cain would really leave Kendra in the dungeon? Not once did Lydia ever think a day like this would ever come. A day that Kendra would be locked up behind bars?
“Kendra has crossed way too many boundaries, and today she crossed a line. I won’t turn a blind eye to her anymore. I’ve extended way too much grace to her considering her father owes me money.” He exhaled sharply, “A lot of it, but she doesn’t know that. Maybe sitting in the dark will help her understand just how deep their grave is.”
Lydia nodded, though she wondered if Kendra even had the intelligence to grasp the situation. She had been raised spoiled, entitled, believing herself untouchable. This… this would be a rude awakening.

They reached the doors to the meeting room. Cain pushed the doors open, and silence fell instantly.
All eyes turned toward him as he stepped inside. The room was filled with everyone who should be present. Lydia, Nathan, Callum, Cain, and Xander.
Xander sat on the far end, his gaze locking onto Cain’s the moment he entered. They all stood up the second Cain stepped into the room. He made his way towards the chair and sat down, the rest following suit.
Cain’s gaze flickered around the room then he spoke. “Where did we stop?”
Lydia stood up, “We were discussing who would be the one to go to Silvermoon Pack and assume leadership under your command,” she said, “Until the pack can be merged with Vehiron.”
Her sharp eyes flickered around the room. “You suggested Xander.”
