Chapter 6
Chapter 6
In the days that followed, I never asked Julian to do anything again, not even calling his name once.
Before, he’d complained that I’d call his name for no reason all day long, even making him
personally hand me a fruit platter that was within my reach.
Now that I wasn’t bothering him anymore, he seemed unhappy about it.
When I was about to go out without calling him along, he finally couldn’t sit still any longer.
He gripped my wheelchair’s armrest, his eyes churning like molten lava.
“Just half a month left!”
“Fine.”
I didn’t hesitate for even a second.
His entire demeanor seemed to lighten as he bent down to lift me into the car.
I caught his familiar scent.
Every time he’d rescued me, he’d carried me just like this, carefully enveloping me in that reassuring
smell.
I’d moved closer to him countless times before, addicted to his scent.
But now, smelling it only reminded me of my past foolishness, the fear and despair of being locked in that dark room, and my broken limbs, my hands that would never fully recover…
My body suddenly trembled uncontrollably. I turned my head away, wanting nothing more than to
be as far from him as possible.
Feeling my reaction, Julian felt something inexplicable rise within him.
He knew Katie couldn’t let him go.
She was still just like before, trembling nervously at intimate contact with him.

Thought of that, Julian’s lips unconsciously curved into a slight smile.
“Where do you want to go today?”
“The bank.”
“Didn’t you want me to apologize to her? I should at least get a decent gift.”
Julian watched me through the rearview mirror, his mood visibly brightening at my apparent compliance.
I stared out the window, not sparing him another glance.
As soon as we arrived at the bank, I spotted a familiar vehicle.
Last year on my birthday, I’d won a major jewelry design award. I’d had my eye on this supercar–the only one in the country–specifically designed for women.
But my own brother had bought it first and given it to Aria as a gift.
Since then, that car had become yet another trophy in her campaign against me.
Everything I liked, Aria would snatch away–the car, and Julian too!
After finishing my business in the VIP room, I saw Aria.
She was in another private room, holding a box of jewelry, “humbly” showing off each piece amid the staff’s praises.
“Tomorrow’s my birthday. My brother told me to pick a few pieces to wear. Which ones do you think look best?”
Those jewelry was part of my mother’s inheritance to my brother, now reduced to props used to please my enemy.
A wave of bitter resentment filled my chest.
Julian also looked in that direction, his eyes gentle as water.
‘Aren’t you going over?” I scoffed.
Then he became serious: “I promised I’d stay by your side and protect you.”

I remained noncommittal.
At the bank entrance, Aria and I inevitably crossed paths.
“Julian!”
Aria spotted Julian immediately and called out sweetly.
Just then, a car lost control and sped toward me.
“Look out!”
Julian’s expression changed drastically. Without hesitation, he abandoned me and rushed toward Aria, pulling her away.
Meanwhile, I was left completely immobile, fully exposed to the car’s hard steel frame.
Everyone around us panicked, but I felt no fear–only mockery as I looked at the man who had just
sworn to protect me.
At the last moment, Julian seemed to remember me. He turned back hurriedly, meeting my eyes.
An inexplicable panic seized him.
Then he rushed toward me again, but it was too late.
“Katie!”
A strong force pulled me away.
The car barely grazed the footrest of my wheelchair as it passed.
Lucian was terrified, his face pale and lips trembling, momentarily speechless.
Julian finally reached us. I could see his hands shaking.
I looked coldly into his eyes. “You said you’d protect me. Hah…”
Julian slowly clenched his fists. He wanted to explain, but I no longer wanted to hear it.
I asked Lucian to take me home.

For the first time, I left Julian behind.
For the first time, Julian had to take a taxi to follow me back.
Rain had started falling without my noticing.
I sat by the floor–to–ceiling window, admiring the curtain of rain.
Then I saw that he stood below, looking up at me, his gaze stubborn yet determined.
He looked exactly like he did the day I took him in.
That day, it was also pouring rain.
I turned away. “Close the curtains.”
The caretaker immediately complied.-
The heavy curtains fell, completely cutting off the world between him and me.
