The day of Aria’s birthday, my brother called early to warn me.
“If you don’t come apologize to Aria today, don’t bother coming back to the Shen family ever again!”
He seemed to forget that I hadn’t been back to that so–called “home” for three years.
But I went anyway.
When Julian saw me leaving, he was the first to grab my wheelchair’s handles, just like always.
This time, though, I didn’t move. I just stared at him silently.
Meeting my eyes, he slowly released his grip.
The new bodyguard took over the wheelchair.
I didn’t say a single word to Julian, even as I got in the car and left.
He just stood there, watching my car disappear down the road.
Alex wasn’t at all surprised by my arrival. He flashed a mocking smile, then ignored me completely as he went to greet the other guests.
My father and his mistress–turned–stepmom, Linda, flanked Aria like protective shields as they welcomed guests alongside my brother–the perfect picture of a harmonious family of four.
Julian showed up anyway, arriving just before the Reid family heir’s gift was presented.
He looked especially handsome today. When he gazed at Aria opening her presents from across the crowd, his eyes were gentle and adoring.
I only glanced once before looking away.
Aria was thrilled with the Reid family heir’s gift. She had my bodyguard and caretaker sent away, then strutted over to me in her designer outfit, absolutely gloating.
‘See that, sister? That was from the Reid family heir!”

She used to be inferior to me in every way, which is why she always tried to steal everything from me. But the Reid family heir was exclusively hers. How could she not show off?
“A pheasant will always be a pheasant, never fit for the main stage,” I replied coldly.
“You-!”
Aria was seething, but then she spotted the cutlery on the nearby table and suddenly smiled.
I knew what she planned to do the moment she raised her hand.
But I didn’t try to stop her. I didn’t panic. I just watched her little performance unfold.
“Ah! Sister, what are you doing? Just because you’re jealous doesn’t mean you should use a knife!”
The dinner knife fell by my feet while her palm revealed a shallow cut.
Everyone turned to look–my father, my brother, and Julian.
Linda rushed over to cradle Aria’s hand, tears flowing on command, yet somehow managing to look
like she was too afraid of me–the legitimate Shred daughter–to express her anger.
As if she’d ever been intimidated by me.
Immediately, people started pitying her, sympathizing with the mother and daughter who
supposedly suffered under my bullying.
I almost laughed out loud.
It was always the same clumsy trick, the same terrible acting, yet somehow people fell for it every single time.
“Katie, I know you don’t like me, but Aria is innocent. How can you keep hurting her like this? Aren’t you afraid the Reid heir will retaliate against you again?” my biological father scolded, his eyes bulging with rage.
“How could I have fathered such a monster! Today, if you don’t apologize properly to Aria and earn her forgiveness, I’ll disown you as my daughter!”
My brother was shaking with anger. “Katie, have you forgotten my warning? Someone bring the ‘amily punishment tools!”

Chapter 7
All the guests were pointing fingers and whispering about me.
And Julian, my supposed bodyguard? He just stood there watching the show, watching me bring
trouble upon myself.
“What? Are you all that eager to kill me?”
I swept my gaze from Aria to my stepmother, to my father, to my brother, and finally landing on
-Julian.
I gave a cold laugh and reached for the bloody dinner knife.
Obviously, my hands couldn’t even pick up a knife anymore.
The onlooking guests finally realized this. “Everyone says Katie was beaten by the Reid heir until her limbs were broken and the tendons in her hands were severed. She’s basically helpless now–how could she possibly wield a knife to hurt anyone?”
Aria’s face paled slightly.
Linda, who had seen it all before, immediately covered for her. “Katie, stop acting. Your hands aren’t really injured, are they?”
My father and brother immediately joined forces against me.
The whole family started accusing me of acting, and the guests began to waver in their opinions.
Just then, my caretaker and bodyguard returned.
“You’re right, I’m not injured. So how should I make it up to Aria?” I said.
They were caught off guard by my quick admission of guilt and were momentarily speechless.
I asked my caretaker to tie the dinner knife to my right palm in a gripping position.
Then I drove the knife hard through my left palm. Blood immediately sprayed out.
With the force of my action, the wounds on my right hand reopened too.
In an instant, both my hands were a bloody mess.
“Is this enough?” I asked calmly.
