Chapter 19
The sudden attack caught everyone off guard–neither the assistants nor the bodyguards had time to react.
A searing pain shot through Adrian’s abdomen. His pupils contracted as he instinctively grabbed Lillian’s wrist and flung her away from hims
Blood poured between his fingers, soaking his once pristine shirt in dark red.
Doubling over, he clutched the wound, his face drained of color. His breath came in harsh gasps, laced with agony and fury.
“Call an ambulance! And–get this psycho out of my house!”
He hadn’t even finished shouting when everything went dark. His knees buckled, and he collapsed.
When he opened his eyes again, it was dawn three days later. The smell of antiseptic filled the air.
The attending physician let out a breath of relief as soon as he saw Adrian was awake.
“Mr. Whitmore, your condition is better than expected. Fortunately, the stab missed your vital organs and the force wasn’t strong. As long as you rest, there should be no lasting damage.”
Adrian furrowed his brows and tried to sit up–only to suck in a sharp breath from the pain. He glanced down at the bandages wrapped around his abdomen, then turned to his assistant.
“Has Evelyn… come back yet?”
The assistant hesitated. “Word is, she and Mr. Blake just returned from the South today… but sir, you really shouldn’t-”
Before he could finish, Adrian had already shoved the sheets aside.
Ignoring the IV still attached to his arm and the doctor’s frantic protests, he stumbled out of the hospital room, like a man possessed.
Evelyn’s POV
Blake and I had been traveling for over a month. By the time we returned, things between us had completely changed.
Where we used to tread carefully, now everything felt natural.
On the ride back into the city, I sat behind him on his motorcycle, laughing and teasing like we’d known each other our whole lives.
At a red light, he reached up and tucked a windblown strand of hair behind my ear–then pressed a light kiss to my temple.
My cheeks flushed, and I gave him a playful shove. “Quit it.”
What I didn’t expect… was to see Adrian watching us.
He stood at the corner of the street, eyes locked on us like a man on the verge of combustion.
We used to be that close too. But in the end, he chose someone else.
I felt his gaze burning into my back–but I never turned around.
Later, just as Blake and I stepped into the house, Adrian stormed in.
The first thing he saw was us kissing.
“Blake! What the hell are you doing!” His voice rose sharply.
I jumped in surprise and instinctively tried to pull away, but Blake just tightened his hold around my waist and lazily fired back, “Kissing my wife. Got
a problem with that, Adrian? Door’s behind you–don’t forget to close it on your way out.”
Adrian’s face darkened. He ignored Blake and stepped closer, his eyes locking on me–raw regret bleeding through his expression.

Chapter 19
“Evelyn, I know I messed up. I’ve divorced Lillian. Please, can we try again? I won’t fail you this time.”
Blake’s expression turned icy, but he didn’t interrupt.
I gave a small smile.
Meeting Adrian’s eyes, I said calmly, “I already wrote you a letter, remember? I don’t love you anymore. Please respect my choice and stop showing up like this.”
He shook his head, like he couldn’t accept it. His emotions frayed, unraveling.
“I get it now. I was a damn fool, Evelyn. But we still have a chance, don’t we? It’s always been you–I swear, it’s always been you. Just give me one more
chance.”
And then, right there in the entryway–he dropped to his knees.
