Chapter 16
Chapter 16
“Liam,” Olivia said softly once she was settled in her seat.
Liam turned to look at her.
“Do you remember the time you bought me those cream puffs?” She smiled faintly.
Of course Liam remembered, but he didn’t say anything.
She continued, “After I bombed my SAT, I was sitting in the park all day, feeling sorry for myself. I didn’t even realize how hungry I was until you showed up with those puffs.
“Maybe it was just the hunger talking, but I’ve never forgotten how good they tasted. Even now, when I’m feeling down, they always seem to cheer me up.”
Liam’s usually cold gaze softened slightly, but his voice remained cool. “I don’t remember that.”
Olivia had never expected him to remember. She looked down at the puffs in her lap and smiled quietly.
Liam watched her, his expression unreadable. He pursed his lips. ‘How could something so simple make her this happy? Maybe she doesn’t need much to feel content. It’s a rare quality, one that Neil’ll never understand. Even when she wants so little, he still thinks she’s greedy.”
Thirty minutes later, the car pulled up in front of an upscale restaurant in the city, Olivia and Liam stepped out and entered the restaurant, with Liam leading the way. Olivia spotted Felicity seated by the window almost instantly.
Felicity waved with a bright smile and rose to greet them. “Finally!”
“Hey, Felicity,” Olivia said, nodding and handing her a container. “Liam brought you these cream puffs. He said they’re your favorite.”
Felicity hesitated, giving Liam a puzzled look that seemed to ask, “My favorite? Since when?”
Liam just gave her a knowing glance, and Felicity caught on and decided to play along. She smiled and took the bag, “That’s typical Liam. All tough on the outside, but actually really thoughtful.”
Olivia smiled but kept quiet. She wasn’t about to judge Liam. Not after that cutting question he’d thrown at her years ago-“Who do you think you are? Do you think you know me?” These days, she was just relieved they had a decent relationship.
“Alright, let’s sit down and enjoy,” Felicity said, already pulling out a chair for Olivia.
The table was a feast of the finest local dishes. Olivia glanced over and laughed, “Felicity, you’ve outdone yourself! These are all my favorites.”
She didn’t notice the brief, uneasy flicker that crossed Liam’s face.
Felicity smiled, her eyes flicking to Liam. “I’m glad you like them,” she said, her voice trailing off with a hint of something more. “Though I wasn’t the only one who chose them.”
“Huh?” Olivia’s brow furrowed in confusion,
Felicity began, “Actually–”
But Liam cut her off. “Didn’t you have something to tell Olivia?”
