Chapter 10
“Once Harrison Group pulls through this, just wait! Even if you all get on your knees and beg, I won’t spare a single glance your way!”
News about Harrison Group occasionally reached my ears through the guests at the bed and breakfast. Word was, Declan had gone to the bank to apply for loans, trying desperately to get Harrison Group back on track.
Many people raised funds for Declan based on Harrison Group’s former glory. However, the financial holes left by the three major failed projects were too deep.
Even with all the fundraising efforts, it was like a drop in the ocean. Eventually, the main doors of Harrison Group were chained shut.
All shareholders were required to pay off their debts based on their shareholdings. Hearing this news, I recalled the scene of being forced to sign the equity transfer agreement on the table, which only served to remind me of the unpredictability of life. The bed and breakfast had already established a system and no longer required my constant supervision.
On my first day working at the Miller Corporation, there were flowers on my desk. Geogg Miller stood by my office door. “Getting you to join wasn’t easy,” he said.
I smiled, familiarized myself with the office supplies and immersed myself in work.
At night, shouts echoed along the riverbank. By the time the police arrived to retrieve the body, it was already too late.
No one could find his identification information. His face was swollen beyond recognition. It wasn’t until the forensic examination that his identity was confirmed.
That day, my bed and breakfast mailbox received a letter from the forensic office.
The words “I’m sorry” on the paper were blurred by water. I recognized the handwriting, but my expression remained unchanged.
I picked up the note and threw it away.
Perhaps this was Declan’s fate. I shouldn’t have changed it seven years ago.
