Chapter 2
I let out a bitter chuckle and slipped into my car.
Everyone in Amveris’ high society was well aware that I was hopelessly in love with Jasper. I helped him develop his products and even took care of hiring models for his campaigns. All he had to do was enjoy the end result.
He used to tell me his family didn’t have deep roots in Amveris and that he needed help. Hence, I gave him everything I had. I exhausted my family’s resources for him.
However, at the celebration party, when it came time to thank those who helped him, he didn’t even mention my name. Instead, he tearfully thanked Coco, a nobody, an influencer who barely scraped the spotlight.
It was not until then that I learned that his first love, Coco, had come back.
Without any prior notice, he replaced all of his product spokespersons with her. When I asked him about it, he just smiled and said, “Coco is hardworking and ambitious. Why don’t we give her a chance?”
I thought it was ridiculous. Since when was success in this industry just about hard work and ambition?
From then on, they spent more time together.
When Coco was caught in a wave of online harassment, he didn’t hesitate to use all of his company’s resources to defend her. He slapped me across the face in front of everyone when I questioned him.
“Coco is an employee of our company. What’s it got to do with you? She’s sweet and innocent; she doesn’t even know what’s going on! Am I supposed to just stand by and watch her get bullied?”
But the truth was that Coco had secretly met with one of her livestream sponsors, and his wife found out. That was what sparked the backlash.
I wasn’t about to go through all those lies and pain again—not in this life.
…
I had just arrived at the hospital to schedule an abortion when I looked up and spotted Jasper carefully supporting Coco as they walked in. The way they smiled at each other made them look like the perfect couple.
The moment our eyes met, a shiver shot through me, and I couldn’t help but tremble all over. The pain from that fatal fall in my previous life crashed over me.
The smile on his face disappeared right away, and his eyes turned cold when he saw me.
Coco’s voice was timid, but there was a sly look in her eyes. “Please don’t get the wrong idea, Wynne. The stage suddenly collapsed during the event, and I fell. Mr. Swanson was just kind enough to bring me to the hospital…”
There was a modest bruise on her ankle. Coco then tugged on Jasper’s sleeve pitifully. “Please don’t blame Wynne. I’m sure she didn’t mean for this to happen.”
Of course, that was all it took. Jasper’s eyes turned bloodshot with rage as he stormed over and grabbed me by the throat. “If it weren’t for you, Coco wouldn’t be hurt!”
It was an event I wasn’t even invited to—one I wasn’t even present for—and yet it was my fault.
As my face flushed crimson, Jasper caught a glimpse of the sign for the obstetrics and gynecology department and scoffed, “Wynne Jennings, don’t tell me you’re trying to trap me by pretending to be pregnant?”
He abruptly let go of me, and I collapsed onto the cold tile floor. “If you’re actually pregnant, get rid of it yourself. Don’t make me do it. You’re not even worthy of carrying my child!” he spat before walking away while holding Coco’s hand.
I felt a warm, sticky sensation spread between my legs. A passing nurse saw me and panicked, yelling, “Quick, come help her!”
