Only now did Knox realize his terrible mistake.
He should have told Celia he was also reborn the moment she said she was and wanted to make amends.
Celia had many ways to compensate him–why did he choose such an extreme method?
Why did he need to find a mistress to provoke her?
But Knox’s regret came too late. Celia was dead, not even leaving behind ashes.
“AHHH!”
Knox finally broke down crying. Mid–sob, his throat suddenly filled with sweetness, and the next moment, blood gushed from his mouth!
In that instant, Knox’s vision went black and he lost consciousness completely.
Knox had a very long dream where he saw Celia running toward him full of love, throwing herself into his arms.
She sweetly kissed him and said, “Knox, I love you.”
Just as Knox was about to kiss her back, the dream suddenly ended.
Celia instantly turned to ash and smoke in his arms.
No matter how Knox tried to grasp it, he couldn’t catch even a wisp of smoke.
“No! Don’t go, Celia!”
Knox woke from the nightmare in terror, sitting up abruptly.
He found himself lying in bed with an IV drip attached to his hand.
Beside him stood Vivian, his assistant, and a stranger.
“Mr. Whitfield, please accept my condolences. I’m Ms. Celia Montgomery’s divorce attorney.”
The word “divorce” made Knox’s head snap up. “What did you say?”
Vivian’s eyes immediately lit up at the mention of divorce!
Just as Vivian was about to speak, the assistant, sensing trouble, quickly escorted her out.
Only then did Celia’s divorce attorney pull out the finalized divorce certificate and explain the situation to Knox.
“A month ago, Ms. Montgomery asked me to handle the divorce proceedings. She requested nothing and told me that no matter what happened, I must deliver the divorce certificate to you personally.”
“Also, Mr. Whitfield, Ms. Montgomery asked me to give you a message. She said the past is behind you two now, and from here on, you two should each live well and never meet again.”
The attorney placed the divorce certificate on Knox’s bedside table.
Knox’s mind went completely blank as he stared at the dark red certificate, its gold seal catching the light.
After a long moment, Knox slowly reached for it, but his fingers recoiled the instant they touched the cover.
The marriage certificate had been gold–embossed red, but this one was the dark red of dried blood, with serrated edges from the civil affairs bureau’s steel stamp.
The pages rustled as he opened it, the printed words “DIVORCE CERTIFICATE” burning into his retinas.
“This can’t be…”

Why would she suddenly divorce him?
For a moment, Knox doubted whetlier Celia had really been reborn, whether she’d actually said those words.
Did Celia really love him or not?
Knox’s Adam’s apple bobbed in his taut throat like he was swallowing a sharp edged ice cube, the jagged corners cutting his throat and bleeding to his mouth.
When had she given him divorce papers?
Memory suddenly pierced through the fog. That day, his assistant’s documents had indeed included a divorce agreement.
But he’d been focused entirely on Vivian and hadn’t looked carefully.
Even later, when Celia looked relieved after getting the signed papers, he’d found it puzzling.
But Knox hadn’t thought much of it. Now he finally understood.
She’d wanted to divorce him that early?
