EPISODE 16
Before the blade could pierce my stomach, a sudden force surged from within me, an unseen power bursting outward like a shockwave.
Helen was thrown across the room, landing with a harsh thud against the wooden floor.
At the same moment, the fog that had clouded my mind lifted, and I gasped, my body regaining its strength. My limbs, once sluggish and unresponsive, now moved freely as I pushed myself upright, my breaths coming in sharp gasps.
Helen groaned from the floor, clutching her stomach, her face contorted in pain. A strangled cry escaped her lips as she doubled over, her body trembling.
Her scent shifted to an overwhelming mix of distress and something more. Panic flickered across her face, her hands pressing against her lower abdomen as realization dawned upon her. “No… not now…” she gasped, her voice barely above a whisper.
A sudden wetness pooled beneath her, soaking the floor, followed by a sharp inhale as pain gripped her. Her body shuddered, the strain evident in every fiber of her being. She was close to labor.
I could see it in the way her breathing turned ragged, her muscles tensed in preparation for what was to come. The stress of the night, the force that had thrown her back, had triggered it earlier than expected.
The den doors burst open. Heavy footfalls echoed through the floor as Daniel stepped inside. His golden eyes scanned the room, taking in the scene before him.
Me, perched on the edge of the bed, and Helen, sprawled on the floor, blood trailing down her thighs. His body went rigid, his instincts flaring to life as he immediately rushed toward her.
“Helen!” he called, his voice laced with urgency.
Helen whimpered, her eyes filling with tears as she clung to his arm. “Daniel… It hurts,” she sobbed, her body curling inward as another wave of pain rippled through her.
His hands hovered over her, his expression torn between concern and confusion. “What happened?” he demanded, looking between the two of us.
Helen’s fingers tightened around his wrist, her face twisted in agony, but her voice was steady, laced with deception.
“I… I just came to see Maurice,” she said through choked sobs. “I hadn’t seen her in months and wanted to check if she was doing well since she was out in the rogue lands… I wanted to talk, to share stories about our pregnancies…”
She hiccupped, her free hand pressing against her stomach, smearing blood across her dress. “But she got angry. I don’t know why. She shoved me… hard. I barely had time to react.” She looked up at Daniel, her tear–streaked face filled with feigned pain.
However, Daniel seemed doubtful. After all, during the months Maurice had been away, he had been frantically searching for her while treating Helen indifferently. Even if Helen tried to show vulnerability, Daniel seemed to be slowly slipping from her grasp.
And so, Helen reacted more fiercely. “I swear, I didn’t do anything wrong this time! I just stood

beside her bed, and suddenly, something pushed me away!”
Daniel’s expression darkened, his gaze snapping to me. Anger simmered beneath his golden. irises as he took a step forward.
“You pushed her?” he asked, his voice sharp. “Didn’t you see she was heavily pregnant?”
I didn’t answer. I merely stared at him, my face devoid of emotion.
His frustration deepened.
“Maurice,” he pressed, his voice hardening. “Tell me why. Why would you do something like this?”
I scoffed. “Do you believe her words that easily?” .
Helen sniffled beside him, shaking her head. “Why would I lie to you, Daniel? Listen to me. Do you think I have any other reason to come here and visit my sister?”
I saw the flicker of doubt cross Daniel’s face, the way his fingers twitched slightly, his gaze shifting between us. Of course, he was aware of what Helen was capable of. After all, he had been complicit in feeding my fetus to her for nourishment.
But, for the first time, he hesitated.
Helen noticed it too. Her face twisted in pain, and she let out a sharp gasp. “Daniel! The baby-” she whimpered. “I can feel it coming. Please, we need to go to the healer, now.”
Daniel’s body went rigid before he acted. Carefully, he lifted her into his arms, his movements tense but firm. Helen curled into him, her face pressing against his chest as she continued to cry. He turned toward the door, ready to carry her out.
But I wasn’t done yet.
“Daniel.” My voice was calm, but there was a finality to it that made him pause. “You have to
make a choice.”
His brows furrowed, confusion flickering across his face. “What?”
I met his gaze, unwavering.
‘One of us has to leave,” I stated. “Either her or me.”
The room seemed to still, the air heavy with unspoken words. Daniel’s jaw tensed, his hands clenching at his sides. He didn’t respond immediately, but the weight of my words settled over him. I could see the struggle in his eyes, the war raging within him as he stood between us.
Helen sobbed harder, gripping his arm like a lifeline. “Daniel, please…” she whispered.
He remained silent, the tension in the room growing thicker with each passing second.
Daniel’s throat bobbed, his grip tightening around Helen. He finally spoke, his voice hoarse,
“We’ll talk when I get back.”
It wasn’t an answer. But it was enough.
