Chapter 35

I clench my teeth over a groan.
Of course, Cassian is here. Of course, he’s going to see whatever
he wants to see.
But that doesn’t prepare me for the moment he strides over and
jerks me out of Jace’s grasp.
“Ow!” I gasp at the pain in my ankle, but it’s almost overwhelmed by the feeling of being pulled against Cassian’s body.
He’s strong and his body rages with heat. I can feel the hard muscles of his biceps where my hands are braced against his
arms.
It sparks a fire in me, and I want to lean into him and let myself
combust.
Damn it, what is wrong with me? I didn’t react this way to Jace.
What hold does Cassian have over me that just a touch can set me on fire and make me forget everything else, even when I’m
hurt?

Jace turns toward Cassian, his whole body tense.
“Let her go! You’re hurting her!”
A low, rumbling growl emanates from Cassian’s chest, and when he speaks, I hear his wolf in his voice. “She’s mine to worry about,
not yours.”
I don’t want Jace to get hurt, and in this moment, Cassian seems far too capable of deciding to hurt him.
“It’s all right,” I say to Jace. “You can go.”
He looks from me to Cassian, and I can tell he’s worried I’m in danger. “Are you sure?” he asks.
Cassian’s growl deepens, and I dig my fingers into his arms as if I could ever hold him in place..
It’s laughable, but as soon as I tighten my grip, his eyes dip down to me, bright and glowing with his wolf, Zephyr.
“He’s not challenging you,” I say quietly. I’m talking to Zephyr, not to Cassian.
Unlike Cassian, Zephyr has always seemed to worry about me.
The growl dies back a little but doesn’t actually stop.

“I’m sure,” I say louder to Jace.

And I am sure. I’m not afraid for myself at all. I’m not telling Jace to
leave out of some sense of self–sacrifice.
I’ve been married to Cassian for three years, and the worst he’s ever done is anger me–and break my heart, I guess.
Either way, I know he’ll never physically hurt me. After all, it’s a husband’s duty to protect his wife, and an Alpha’s duty to protect those that belong to him.
If nothing else, Cassian always does his duty. I’m safe.
Jace doesn’t have that same assurance.
From the stubborn look on Jace’s face, I’m terrified he might do something incredibly brave and incredibly stupid and challenge Cassian right here.
Finally, though, he takes a step back. He gives me a curt nod, then turns around and disappears into the night.
And now I’m alone with my husband again. I sigh. “Are you happy
now?”
“No.” His voice is still a growl, but his eyes have di…ned. This

time, it’s all Cassian and no Zephyr. “Get in the car.”
I roll my eyes. “I can hail a cab. I’ll do it all alone, just like you want me to be. Sounds very safe.”
His grip on me tightens. “I’m giving you a ride home.”
I groan in frustration. “You’re driving me crazy!”
“You’re out with a man while you’re still married.”
“You’re out with a woman while you’re still married,” I snap back.
“Reyna is a business partner!”
“So is Jace!”
Cassian glares down at me, silent for a long moment. Then he says, “So why did I walk out here and find the two of you all over each other?”
I pointedly, slowly look from him to my sky–high heels, which lie on the ground a few feet away. I dropped them when I stumbled.
“I took off my shoes because my feet were killing me and stepped on a rock. I fell. Jace caught me. That’s what you saw.”
His mouth thins. I can’t tell if he believes me or not.

Then he says again, “Get in the car.”
He’s got that stupid, stubborn Alpha look in his eyes.

If I don’t get in this car, he’ll toss me over his shoulder and shove
me in on his own, or he’ll call some of his meathead bodyguards who are probably hidden in the shadows around here to do it for
him.
“Fine,” I say. “Take me to Zina’s place.”
I don’t want him to know where my new house is.
We drive to Zina’s, and he parks the car. I go to get out, and he
tries to help me.
“Stop!” I bark at him. “Just let me do it myself. You’ve already done enough tonight!”
“Your friend isn’t even up there,” Cassian snarls back. “I saw her leave the banquet with someone else. You’ll be injured and alone. Is that what you want? When you have me and a house full of servants who can help you back home?”
I stare straight into his eyes and say, “It’s not my home. Get that through your thick Alpha skull. I will never call that place home again. I don’t want your help! I don’t need you!”

As if my words get through to him for the first time ever, cold rage
fills Cassian’s eyes.
