Kent’s eyes lit up as he heard the suggestion. “Great! Zane has an apartment nearby. Rachel, you know I love your cooking. Why don’t you make it just for me?”
Rachel was momentarily stunned. But seeing Kent looking so pitiful, she couldn’t bear to let him starve. With no other option, she agreed and headed to the apartment with Zane to cook.
As the two of them left together, Kent contentedly nibbled on pastries, turning to praise Brook, “You’re clever as always.”
Brook grinned as he replied, “After all these years by your side, how could I not understand what you’re thinking?”
Although Kent was pleased to create an opportunity for Rachel and Zane to be alone, he still worried.
“That kid is so dense. Who knows if they’ll actually get back together?” The thought of Janice and the fact that Rachel might leave the country at any time only made him more anxious.
Brook tried to reassure him, “If they’re truly meant to be, they will find a way back. You really shouldn’t worry so much.”
He could only hope those words were true. “Is there any progress on what I asked you to look into?”
“There’s a lead. We should have results in a day or two.”
Rachel carried the groceries and followed Zane to his luxury apartment.
She wasn’t surprised. For someone like Zane, having properties all over Guardia was normal. When she lived at Myra Heights, Zane spent most nights at one of his other places anyway.
“How long will you take to cook?” he asked.
“20 minutes, tops.” Rachel wasn’t interested in the apartment’s layout. She went straight to the kitchen as soon as they got in.
Zane glanced at the kitchen, then turned and settled onto the living room couch.
Rachel had said 20 minutes, and she meant it.
She simply didn’t want to spend any more time alone with Zane than necessary. Even though they weren’t bothering each other, the atmosphere was still somewhat tense.

Soon, the aroma of food filled the apartment.
Zane was instantly–drawn in.
Rachel kept the seasoning light for Kent’s sake. Once it tasted right, she turned off the heat.
“Serve me a bowl.” Zane’s voice came out of nowhere, startling Rachel so much that she nearly dropped the spatula.
“No.” She turned him down without hesitation. There was no way she’d serve him.
Zane braced his hand against the cupboard above her, blocking her from moving away. “Are you sure you’ve got the right seasoning for Grandpa?”
“I tasted it. It’s not too salty.”
“Who knows him better–you or me?”
Rachel was speechless.
“Serve me a bowl. If I’m happy with it, you can give it to Grandpa.”
With that command, he turned and walked out as if it were only natural.
Fuming, Rachel still scooped out a bowl and handed it to him. “Hurry up and try it. If the soup gets cold, it won’t taste good.”
Zane looked down at the bowl, his brow furrowed. Clearly, he hadn’t expected the soup to look like this.
Seeing his expression of distaste, Rachel snapped, “Are you going to eat it or not?”
“Watch your tone,” Zane replied coolly, but he picked up the spoon and took a sip. To his surprise, the tangy, savory flavor caught him off guard.
He took sip after sip.
Rachel was a little surprised by
ton. In the past, Zane wouldn’t have even spared a
glance at her cooking, let alone tasted it. She’d cooked for him countless times, but thi the first time she’d ever seen him eat her cooking.
Even if she knew he was only doing it to make sure the taste was suitable for Kent.
“Are you satisfied now?”
