Chapter 55 Focus On Your Own Business
Chris was indeed popular.
Even while working at the research institute, Rachel had already heard at least five different rumors about Chris having two illegitimate children.
Until one day, she overheard, “Chris, the male idol, just signed as the new product ambassador for TN Group. Do you think this scandal will affect him?”
“With Mr. Jenkins calling the shots? The guy’s ruthless. I’d say Chris’s endorsement is already done for.”
Rachel’s heart sank. She couldn’t help but worry.
After all, Chris had only landed in this mess because of those two little ones.
Lost in thought, she was startled by the ringing of her phone.
Seeing it was James, she immediately stepped out of the lab to take the call.
Diego watched her closely, his gaze calculating, like he was already setting something in motion.
“Hello, James.”
“Rachel, I’m already in Guardia. I’m staying at a hotel. When will you done with work?”
Rachel was stunned. “James, are you in Guardia?”
“Yes. That kid’s caused such a mess–he needs a lesson. Don’t worry about me. When you’re done, give me a call and we’ll meet up. I also have something to discuss with you.”
“Okay.”
At noon, Rachel made a point to clear her schedule so she could meet with James.
What she didn’t expect was for Zane to show up at the research institute just after she’d left, only to find no sign of her anywhere.
Diego appeared quietly, bowing slightly as he addressed Zane. “Mr. Jenkins, are you looking for Rachel? She got a call and stepped out around noon to meet someone. From what I overheard, it sounded like someone important… a man, based on how she spoke to him.”
Zane frowned slightly, fixing Diego with a cold stare.

Diego thought he was sowing seeds of doubt about Rachel in Zane’s mind.
But under Zane’s piercing gaze, Diego began to feel uneasy, his heart thudding in his chest.
Zane stepped forward, his presence looming, and said coldly, “I hired you to work–not to spread gossip.”
Sweat broke out on Diego’s forehead as he quickly bowed his head. “Yes, Mr. Jenkins.”
Zane didn’t spare him another glance. He turned and walked off.
Even after getting into the car, his mood hadn’t improved. Colin, picking up on the tension, glanced at him through the rearview mirror. “Mr. Jenkins, would you like me to call Ms. Freeman now?”
“Find out who she’s meeting,” Zane instructed.
The place where Rachel met James was quiet and secluded. Chris had even gone to the trouble of disguising himself before coming over.
James was dressed in a sharp suit, his features strikingly handsome. With his long hair, he looked almost androgynous. Now, as he sat there fuming, the air around him seemed to chill and darken.
Chris, in front of him, was like a puppy that had just been scolded–he didn’t even dare to make a sound.
Rachel, sensing the tension, took the initiative to break the silence. “James, you can’t blame Chris for everything. I asked last night. Alyssa wanted to go for a walk, so Chris took them out. Who could have guessed the paparazzi would be following?”
“He’s a public figure. Being tailed by paparazzi comes with the territory. If he can’t even handle that, where’s his head at? Luckily, Alyssa and Nick’s faces weren’t caught on camera. If they had been, you’d be heading straight home to lie low and behave.”
Acting meant everything to Chris. Taking that away would crush him.
“James, I really know I messed up,” Chris pleaded.
Rachel chimed in to help, “James, it wasn’t just Chris–Alyssa and Nick were at fault too. You can’t blame him for everything.”
