Chapter 6 Blind
At her words, the bitterness in Kenneth’s heart welled up even
more.
But he’d never been one to pour out his grievances to others; it would only make him look even more pathetic.
Meeting Harriet’s worried look, he shook his head and mumbled, “No.”
Harriet eyed him doubtfully. “Then do they know you’re leaving?”
As she said this, she deliberately glanced over at Eleanor and
Victoria.
Over there, Eleanor and Victoria were crowded around Lucas like
loyal bodyguards, as if they were afraid Harriet would march over and give him a good scolding.
Harriet fumed.
Really… they’re so blind!
Having been in the business world for years, Harriet had a sharp
eye for people.
This Lucas was definitely not as innocent as he appeared.

Kenneth dodged Harriet’s question.
He hung his head and forced a wry smile. There was more
resignation than disappointment in his eyes.
Harriet, being perceptive, understood it all.
“You wait. I’ll make those two silly girls apologize to you!” she growled between gritted teeth and stormed off to confront
Eleanor and Victoria.
Kenneth felt a warm feeling in his heart.
Having Harriet in his life was truly a blessing.
But he didn’t want anything forced, whether it was material things
or people.
Kenneth croaked, “People change as they grow up. Eleanor,
Victoria, and I… we’re just drifting apart.”
He shook his head resolutely to make his stance clear.
Love couldn’t be forced, and neither could friendship.
Kenneth had gone to great lengths to salvage their bond, but that
didn’t mean he’d degrade himself and rely on an elder’s influence

to keep Eleanor and Victoria by his side.
“You’re just too soft–hearted,” Harriet said, her heart brimming with pity.
She respected Kenneth’s decision, yet there was a practical matter to ponder.
Kenneth had been in poor health since childhood, and Eleanor and Victoria had always been there to look after him.
No one knew his condition better than they did.
Harriet took a deep breath, saying, “Okay. Before you leave, let
them take care of you. Think of it as a chance for them to make up
for their wrongdoings.”
Just then, Eleanor noticed they’d been chatting for a while and
strolled over.
She caught the tail–end of Harriet’s statement.
Eleanor frowned slightly. “Mom, even if something goes wrong
with Kenneth, he can hire the best doctors and nurses. He’s got the money for it.”
She didn’t realize how callous her words sounded.

Chapter 6 Blind:
The tenderness in her eyes when she looked at Lucas was in stark contrast to the coldness when they landed on Kenneth.
Ignoring Harriet’s furious expression, she continued, “Lucas has nothing. He only has us.”
“Exactly!” Victoria rushed over and rolled her eyes at Kenneth. “We have to help Lucas take care of his father. We don’t have time for someone who just fakes illness!”
Harriet felt a rush of blood to her head, and her ears began to ring.
She was so incensed that words failed her.
“Victoria, Eleanor, you two don’t have to go to such lengths.” Lucas looked flustered.
Biting his lower lip, he said, “I’m used to taking care of my dad by myself. It’s just a bit of a grind, but I can manage.”
Victoria was so touched by his words that tears welled up in her
eyes.
With a look of disdain, she turned to Kenneth and said, “See?
Lucas would rather tough it out on his own than put us in a bind.
But you? All you do is feign illness and boss Eleanor and me
around like we’re your servants.”

“I didn’t!” Kenneth’s heart skippert a beat, and he couldn’t hold his
Tonque any longer.
He looked at Eleanor, but her expression mirrored Victoria’s.
In an instant, a chill ran through Kenneth’s body, as if he’d been plunged into an ice–cold cellar.
Kenneth had been in poor health for a long time and had
depended on Eleanor and Victoria’s care.
Yet, he never took their kindness for granted.
Once his condition had stabilized, he was eager to pay them back handsomely. Whether it was with money or other means, he gave far more than they had done for him.
Eleanor once ran a marathon for him and nearly suffered from
hypothermia.
In return, he’d plunged into a freezing pond in the dead of winter to retrieve her necklace that had accidentally fallen in, and he’d fallen gravely ill as a result.
Victoria had stood up for him against some unfair classmates.
And when she was terrified because of her alcoholic and abusive father, Kenneth had gone to great lengths to get that scumbag

behind bars.
He always believed that their mutual efforts were made out of willingness, without any expectation of return.
But now, it seemed he had overestimated their friendship.
Victoria scoffed, crossing her arms over her chest. “Oh, come on. Quit trying to act like a good guy in front of Harriet.”
Harriet slowly lifted her right hand, which had been dangling by her side.
Her face was etched with disappointment.
She’d never laid a finger on a child before, but at that moment, she desperately wanted to slap some sense into these two girls!
Kenneth had never experienced such a sharp ache in his heart.
He yanked out the needle, and blood immediately spurted from the puncture wound on his hand, splattering onto the floor.
The sight startled everyone.
Eleanor and Victoria’s expressions also changed.
Instinctively, they took a step towards Kenneth, just as they

always did.
But then Lucas‘ panicked voice cut through the air. “Kenneth, if you’re trying to get their attention, you don’t have to go and mess up your own health like this!”
Harriet was shouting for a nurse while giving Lucas a withering.
look.
What a whiff of scheming!
Does he really care about Kenneth?
Every word he says sounds nice, but he’s just trying to drive a wedge between them!
“Get out of here!” Harriet was seething, and there was even a glint
of murderous intent in her eyes.
Eleanor quickly stepped in front of Lucas to shield him.
Victoria stamped her foot in anger. “Harriet! If Kenneth can
pretend to be sick, then he can definitely pull that old self–harm stunt to get sympathy!”
Just a moment ago, they’d instinctively shown concern for Kenneth’s injury.

But with Lucas‘ single comment, they Instantly started to suspect every move he made.
Eleanor rubbed her temples. Even her usually composed face was now clouded with irritation.
She turned to Kenneth and said, “It’s not that we don’t want to stay with you, but there’s a right time for everything. Can’t you just wait until we’ve sorted things out for Lucas and his dad?”
Kenneth let the nurse bandage his hand mechanically.
His fingertips quivered slightly, and his heart, already turned to ashes by the fire of disappointment, couldn’t even register the
pain.
“I don’t need your care,” Kenneth said in a cold, steely tone.
He looked at Harriet, bowed deeply, and then, with rigid steps, he leaned against the wall and slowly shuffled out of their sight.
Harriet wanted to follow him, but Kenneth firmly refused.
He was always kind–hearted and magnanimous when dealing with others, but once he made a decision, there was no going
back.
From behind, Victoria’s angry yells rang out. “Harriet, why do you

even waste your time on him? He’s just putting on an act!”
Suddenly, Kenneth felt a blackout before his eyes and lost consciousness for a few seconds. He stumbled and dropped to one knee at the corner.
