Chapter 3 She Doesn’t Belong
In the garden, under the flower arch,
Caroline had her arms around Felix’s neck, kissing him on the swing.
He froze for a second, then just went with it. His hands slid to her waist like they belonged there.
The wind picked up, sending flowers floating everywhere. They kept kissing like they were the only people on earth.
Caroline’s little moans drifted over, each one like a punch to Abigail’s gut.
She’d told herself she was done with him.

But seeing this? It still stung.
Abigail didn’t just give her heart away to
anyone.
Felix had chased her forever before she
said yes.
Once she did, she went all in – gave him everything she had.
Even with all her busy college life going on,
she always made time for him.
But then things got weird.
He started pulling away, acting cold. And she kept thinking it was her fault.

Then she found out the ugly truth. All that time she’d spent on them meant nothing.
The same guy who’d held her hands and promised forever had totally crushed her.
And why? Because she wanted to wait for their wedding night.
She laughed bitterly. Caroline gave him what he wanted, what Abigail wouldn’t. Guess that’s why she lost.
Whatever. They could have each other.
Abigail looked away, fighting the pain in her
chest as she walked up to the house.
Right as she reached for the handle, the

door opened.
15 min left.
There stood her mom, Natalie Winchester,
looking shocked to see her daughter in
a wedding gown. “Abigail? What are you doing here?”
The guilt was clear in her voice – after all, she and her husband had skipped the wedding to take care of Caroline.
“Just picking up some stuff,” Abigail said
flatly.
When she looked at her mom, her heart
twisted.
This was the woman who used to be her best friend, who always had her back.

But now her mom looked at her like she was
nobody – just some stranger who didn’t
belong.
And maybe that was true. They had their
real daughter back now. No space left for
her.
Abigail balled up her fists, pushing down her anger as she tried to walk past her
mom.
Then she heard someone calling out behind
her, sounding panicked.
“Abigail!” The way they yelled her name
made her stop. She heard footsteps rushing
- up.

Her mom looked over at the garden and spotted Caroline and Felix standing there
with flowers all around them.
She got it right away. Pretty obvious what they’d been up to. And now she knew Abigail had seen everything. The look on her face was pure guilt, with a side of pity.
Abigail turned slowly.
Felix stood there, his lips smudged with Caroline’s bright red lipstick, his shirt a crumpled mess.
His eyes were filled with words, but Abigail didn’t care to hear a single one.

Her gaze swept over him, cold and
detached, before she looked away again.
That look hit Felix like a slap to the face.
The warmth and the love that used to fill her
eyes when she looked at him were gone. All
that remained was a cutting indifference.
He panicked. “Abigail, about the wedding…”
“Abigail! I’m so sorry! This is all my fault!” Caroline came running over, fake tears in
her eyes.
She tried to grab Abigail’s hand, but Abigail dodged her.
Caroline didn’t give up. She put on her st sad face, crying and acting all dramatic.

“Abigail, I never meant for this to happen! If I hadn’t passed out, your wedding would’ve been perfect!”
She kept going, putting on a show. “Blame me, not Felix. He was just trying to help me. That’s why he… But you’re so strong. I’m sure you handled everything great by yourself. Not like me – I’m just hopeless. I can’t do anything without Felix.”
Every word was meant to hurt.
Caroline was playing the helpless victim card, like being weak somehow made her the good guy.
Abigail’s stomach turned.

What a joke that she’d ever called this
woman her best friend.

She shot Caroline a cold look that could
freeze hell over.
“Well, well,” Abigail said with a fake smile, “you must be loving this, aren’t you?”
