Chapter 46 Three Friends
Zane said sincerely, “You know your condition. You can’t push yourself too hard.
Janice warmed under his concern. “Okay, I’ll watch the time. I promise I won’t overdo it, alright?”
“Good.”
She smiled. “Now go try what I made–it’s a new dessert recipe I just learned.”
For now, Zane set thoughts of Rachel aside, got up, and moved to the couch, tasting a few bites of the treat she’d prepared.
Although her fever had subsided inside the apartment, Rachel was still feeling terribly weak.
When Rebecca arrived, her arms loaded with bags, she was so shocked by Rachel’s condition that she nearly called an ambulance on the spot. It took several firm reassurances from Rachel before Rebecca finally calmed down. She quickly ordered groceries and got to work making soup

After a short rest, Rachel was startled by a noise outside. Curious, she got up to check–and to her surprise, found Sarah and Harry at the door.
“What are you two doing here?” she asked.
Sarah held up her phone. “Did you even look at your call log? I’ve been calling nonstop since yesterday! Harry stopped by a bunch of times, but you were never home. Honestly, if he hadn’t pushed us to try one more time today, we were this close to calling the cops!”
Just then, Rebecca stepped out of the kitchen carrying a dish, smiling warmly. “I was in the middle of cooking when I heard the knock. Figured it had to be one of your friends, so I let them in.”
Harry gave Rachel a worried look. “You don’t look so great. Ms. Anderson said you caught a cold?”
Rachel gåve a small nod.
Sensing the moment, Rebecca spoke gently. “I’ve finished preparing your meal, Rachel. I’ll head back to the research institute now and check in with Mr. Jennings.”
“Thank you. Call me if anything comes up,” Rachel replied.
With that, Rebecca grabbed her bag and left.

Rachel sat at the dining table. “Come, let’s eat and talk.
Harry and Sarah took their seats, and Rachel briefly explained what had happened the day before
When she finished, both of them cursed under their breath.
When Rachel reached the part about where she’d spent the night, the reaction was explosive -Sarah nearly shouted the roof off.
Harry kept a level head and stepped in to calm her down. “Rachel’s still recovering. Let’s not cause a scene.”
Rachel gave him a grateful nod–Harry had always been the steady, thoughtful one.
Sarah, on the other hand, was livid. “What kind of family does something like that? They drugged you, for God’s sake! I wanted to go after them seven years ago, and now I want to even more.”
Rachel ate quietly, nodding in agreement from time to time.
Sarah continued to fume. “Those jerks! That old man was practically rushing to shut down your account–he clearly had something up his sleeve. If you’d actually fallen for it yesterday, who knows what would’ve happened? And another thing–how did Zane just happen to show up in time to save you? Was he following you or what?”
All of them fell silent.
Rachel herself had no answer to that.
Harry cleared his throat, cutting through the tension. “Yeah, it was odd that Zane showed up when he did, but at least this time he actually helped Rachel. For once, he played the hero.”
Sarah scoffed. “And what–he thinks that somehow makes up for what he did to her back then?”
Harry shook his head. “Not even a little.”
“Exactly.”
“Let’s set Zane aside for now. The real issue is the Freeman family, right, Rachel?” Harry skillfully steered the conversation back.
“Yes, Harry, I need your help.” She wasn’t about to let what happened yesterday slide. To her, Henry was nothing more than someone who shared her blood, nothing else.
