Chapter 42 Inside The Bathroom
Zane’s brow furrowed as he pulled out his phone and called Colin, instructing him to bring up some ice.
Then, without hesitation, he gently lifted Rachel into his arms and carried her into the bathroom. Carefully, he lowered her into the bathtub and turned on the cold water, letting it rush over her feverish body.
The crisp chill of early fall made the water sting like ice. Rachel, flushed with heat moments ago, instinctively tried to curl up against the shock, but Zane was quicker. He caught her injured left arm and raised it above the water, keeping the wound dry.
Rachel’s mind was foggy, but she could still feel the discomfort in her back and the pain as her left arm was restrained and raised.
“Let… let go of me,” Rachel whimpered, her voice weak and strained with discomfort.
“Don’t move,” Zane said firmly.
She could barely register his voice through the fog clouding her mind. Her body was trapped in a brutal tug–of–war between feverish heat and the icy shock of the cold water. She didn’t even have the strength to open her eyes. Her teeth began to chatter uncontrollably.

Zane’s eyes bluish–purple.
Just then, Colin arrived with the ice.
Zane’s frown deepened as he looked at the bucket, packed to the brim with ice.
Noticing his hesitation, Colin quickly offered an explanation. “Dr. Naver said the more ice, the quicker it’ll bring her fever down.”
Zane gave a curt nod. “Pour it in.”
Colin did as told, emptying the entire bucket into the tub. The ice splashed into the water with a sharp crackle, intensifying the chill.
Without another word, Colin turned and left, quietly closing the door behind him, leaving only Zane and Rachel in the cold, echoing silence of the bathroom.
Zane tossed the showerhead into the tub, letting the cold water keep running. Rachel was restless, shifting and struggling in her fevered state, unable to stay still. Left with no other option, he grabbed a clean towel and firmly tied her hands to the edge of the tub to keep her from hurting herself.

At that moment, Rachel opened her eyes in distress, her vision blurry, but she managed to make out Zane’s face. She tugged at her left hand, but couldn’t break free. Driven by instinet. her right hand clutched at Zane’s shirt.
Suddenly, Zane felt her fingers brush under the waistband of his pants–clearly unintentional, but impossible to ignore.
His eyes darkened in an instant. He grabbed Rachel’s right hand and growled, “If you move again, I swear I’ll throw you out!”
“Let… go of me,” Rachel gasped, still trying to catch her breath.
But Zane picked up on something else in those brief seconds when she looked at him. His eyes narrowed as he crouched beside the tub, his face clouded. “You think I’d hurt you?” he asked quietly.
Rachel instinctively sank lower into the water, small ripples spreading around her. She was in agony, teetering on the edge of consciousness–but Zane’s voice pierced through the fog in her mind with startling clarity.
“Don’t… come near… me,” she managed to say.
Her light–colored shirt was now drenched, clinging to her body and outlining every curve beneath the thin fabric. The sight was undeniably provocative.
Zane muttered a curse under his breath, unable to stop his mind from flashing–unbidden- back to that night with Rachel, seven years ago.

He took a long, steady breath, his eyes dark and unreadable. Then he let go of her right hand and stood up, his voice cold and sharp.
“If you want to stay alive, stay in the tub. But if you’re so set on dying, I can have someone. drag you out anytime.”
Rachel panted, her vision swimming, but she managed to see Zane clearly. She also noticed she wasn’t in a hospital.
“Hos… hospital…” she murmured.
Zane narrowed his eyes. “Are you giving me orders now?”
“Why… didn’t you take me to the hospital?” Rachel’s mind was slipping away again, he burning inside but freezing on the outside. She felt like she was dying.

Zane lunged forward, catching her just in time. He cradled her head and pulled her upright –but the second he tried to let go, she began to sink again, her injured left arm dragging down with her.
Left with no other option, he tightened his grip and held her there, keeping her steady in his
arms.
After what felt like an eternity, Zane let out another low curse under his breath.
