Chapter 40 An Unexpected Appearance
Rachel hit the ground hard, tumbling over and over.
The drugs dulled her senses so much that she couldn’t even tell if anything was broken–just a hazy, overwhelming pain.
She clenched her jaw and forced herself to move. But before she could, someone scooped her up. Her body went rigid, and when she looked up and saw Zane’s face, the shock left her completely speechless.
What was Zane doing here?
He asked, “Should I take you inside or do you want to leave?”
Rachel knew full well that, for now, Zane was her only lifeline–even if his appearance here seemed utterly absurd.
“Take me… to the hospital.”
Zane didn’t say another word. He simply helped her into the car and drove off.
From the balcony, Jeremy watched the car disappear into the distance. His mind went blank –he thought it was game over. But the second it hit him that Henry had set him up, he sprang to his feet, rage surging through him, and stormed off to confront him.
At that moment, Henry was completely in the dark about what had just gone down.
When Jeremy burst in, fuming, both Henry and Phoebe were stunned for a few seconds.
Jeremy grabbed Henry by the collar, baring his teeth. “Henry, are you trying to get me killed? Rachel is with Zane, and you dared to let me mess with his woman? If Zane comes after me, I’ll make sure your whole family never sets foot in Guardia anymore, you hear me?”
“W–what’s going on? Everyone knows Rachel and Zane are divorced. What are you talking about, Mr. Hollands?” Phoebe stammered.
“Zane just took Rachel away!”
“What?” Henry gasped in shock.
Rachel was clearly out of it in the car.
Zane had already noticed the gash on her left arm–her pale shirt soaked through with
blood. He pressed down on it to slow the bleeding, but what worried him more was how hot she felt–way too hot.
His face darkened. The moment he heard Jeremy was at the Freeman house, he had a bad feeling.
He hadn’t meant to intervene. But something made him tell Colin to drive past the Freeman place–and right then, he saw Rachel leap from the second–floor window.
He remembered the woman who, seven years ago, barely dared to speak to him, now risking her life without hesitation.
“I don’t feel good…”
Rachel suddenly whimpered, tugging at her clothes.
In a moment, her blouse was pulled wide open.
“It
Zane’s pupils contracted sharply, but the next second, Rachel grabbed his hand. “It hurts…”
Seeing her state and feeling the burning heat of her skin, a sense of dread flashed through Zane’s mind.
“Colin, turn around. Head to Myra Heights and have Shawn meet us there.”
Myra Heights was the most exclusive villa district in Guardia. It was also where Rachel had lived for two years.
Now, Zane carried her upstairs in his arms. Once on the bed, Rachel couldn’t keep still, her movements smearing blood everywhere.
The situation was dire.

“Mr. Jenkins, Dr. Naver is here.”
When Shawn entered the room and saw Rachel on the bed, his eyes widened in shock. Noticing both her and Zane were covered in blood, he couldn’t help blurting out, “Holy-!”
Zane frowned. “She has a deep cut on her left arm, and she’s been drugged.”
Shawn, a medical prodigy from a long line of doctors, was widely recognized as the youngest and most talented physician of his generation. Staying calm under pressure, he swiftly pulled a syringe from his kit and administered an injection to the feverish, delirious Rachel.
