Jordan forced a smile, his eyes cold. “Selena is just your research partner right now, but it seems you don’t have the right to control who she befriends.”
“You certainly picked a convenient time to make friends,” Zane replied icily.
Jordan remained calm and indifferent. “That’s just what you think, Mr. Jenkins.”
“For your sake, I hope so.”
Zane withdrew his gaze, turned, and got into his car, driving away without another word.
Jordan stood watching, his brows knit tightly as the car disappeared down the road. The thought of Rachel being Zane’s ex–wife wouldn’t leave his mind.
The car had only gone a short way when Zane suddenly told the driver to stop. Colin, understanding without a word, stepped out, leaving just the two of them inside.
Rachel spoke first. “So, are you going to tell me what this is really about?”
Zane shot her a look. “Since when did you start talking to me so casually?”
“Casually?” she echoed, raising an eyebrow.
“Have you really looked into what kind of person Jordan is?” Zane asked, enunciating every word.
Rachel let out a soft laugh. “Zane, we’ve been divorced for seven years. Even if we’re working together now, that doesn’t give you the right to police who I spend time with. You’re crossing a line.”
Zane scoffed, his voice cold as he leaned in, the streetlights casting sharp shadows across his face.
“Jordan and I are competitors. And right after signing a deal with me, you go meet with him. You really don’t think I have a right to question that?”
“Oh?” Rachel replied, her tone cool. “Worried I might leak something?”
Zane didn’t answer–but the look on his face said everything.
Rachel countered, “Mr. Jenkins, if you don’t trust me, just end the contract.”
“You’re playing games with me.” Zane’s face darkened, his tone menacing.

“If there’s not even basic trust in this partnership, shouldn’t we resolve it sooner rather than later?” Rachel goaded him, unrestrained. “I get why you’d think that way. After all, you didn’t even know I was Selena at the start, did you?”
As she finished, Zane grabbed her wrist. “Whether or not we end the contract is up to me. Until I say otherwise, you’re bound by its terms. You’ll regret it if I catch you getting close to Jordan again.”
Rachel glanced nonchalantly at his hand gripping her wrist. “You’re so fond of getting physical–does your girlfriend know? Would she be jealous?”
Zane let go of her hand in disgust.
Rachel let out a soft, carefree laugh, her beauty effortless.
She said, “Are we done here, Mr. Jenkins? You’re not planning to just leave me here to catch a cab home by myself, are you?”
Zane shot her a mocking look. “Don’t you like taking cabs?”
“I do, but I don’t mind a luxury car either.” Rachel met his gaze boldly. “If people found out you treated your ex–wife so harshly, it wouldn’t look good for you.”
In the end, Zane told Colin to drive Rachel back to her apartment.
As she was dropped off, Zane’s phone rang. It was Janice.
“Zane, are you done with dinner?”
Hearing Janice’s gentle, spring–like voice, the hostility in Zane’s expression faded, and his tone softened. “Not yet.”
“So you’re still at dinner?”
“Yeah,” Zane reassured her patiently. “Don’t wait up for me. I’ll be late.”
“All right. Take care of yourself.”
Janice hung up the phone. She was sitting in a sedan, parked just outside Rachel’s apartment complex.
She had seen Zane’s car enter, which was why she’d called him.
She hadn’t expected Zane to lie to her. Her gaze turned cold and vicious as she stared at the brightly lit building ahead, then dialed another number.
