“An Alpha was murdered and, therefore, his mate was technically murdered as well. It isn’t just a Beta trying to overthrow the Alpha and takeover. There was more than one person trying to overthrow the Alpha. Another pack was most likely hired to attack and kill the Alpha. Money is missing. This isn’t a simple attack to take over, there are so many levels of treachery here that I’m not surprised they are bringing in a large group to investigate. Honestly, I’m just surprised that it took them this long to decide to come.”
“It’s good that they did take this long. You’ve done a lot of their work for them. You know that Alpha Colin was murdered,” he says, both of us now watching my mother and Enya. My mother is wiping Enya’s eyes and murmuring softly to her. I can’t hear them, but Enya is nodding.
“This is good for your future endeavors with the Council, Christian,” my father says.
“I don’t care about that, not right now anyway. What I care about is that the two Alpha heirs who are under my protection are at risk.”
He smiles at me, slapping a hand on my shoulder. “Which is exactly why the Council made the right choice. I know you have other priorities right now, but the reality is, they will see what you’ve done in a very short amount of time. You will become invaluable to them. It‘ s important to me too, Christian. I hated that I only had one pack to give to my heirs. I’m glad to know that you’ve not only found your niche, but you will excel at it. Working for the Council is just as prestigious as being an Alpha of a pack.”

“I know. And I’m proud of you for doing it for the right reasons.‘
“Thanks, Dad.”
Once Enya calms down, we sit around the table and talk about our plans for the next couple of days. My parents had intended to leave tomorrow, but now, they are going to extend their stay to ensure that they are here to answer any questions the Council has. It will make my life easier. With five of us, including Shane, here to work with the Council. It will make things easier on all of us.
When we’re done, I say goodnight to my parents and walk Enya upstairs. I need to check on Shane, but I also still need to speak with Enya.
“We need to finish our conversation, but I need to check on Shane. I’ll come to your room after I’m done. Is that okay?” I ask her.
“How about I come to your room. I liked my whiskey talk with your mom and sister. Maybe we can have a whiskey talk since you have something you want to talk about?” she asks.
“Okay. My door’s unlocked. I’ll be there as soon as I’m sure Shane is good.”
“See you soon,” she says, and the little minx slides her hand over my stomach as I pass her.

not for the same reasons. I know very well what I’ve been doing when I tease him. As surprised as I am by it, it seems to be working. Far from putting me in my place or setting boundaries, it feels like Christian struggles to maintain control when I touch him. Even the gentle touches seem to affect him. And I’m becoming addicted to breaking down this man’s walls and barriers and being the woman who can make him lose control.
