Daniel came in with his crew to clean up, but even with years of martial arts training and a strong stomach he nearly gagged the moment he stepped inside. 

The stench clung to the air like rot in a scaled room. 

They worked fast, wiping everything down and cracking open a canister of air freshener. 

It took several rounds before the smell even started to fade. Only after that did it feel like they could breathe without flinching. 

Alice didn’t blink. 

She had worked in worse conditions and handled far messier cases. She stayed calm, focused, and unbothered. 

Eric, though, couldn’t hide his discomfort. 

Things were already complicated between them, and now he had gone and embarrassed himself in front of her. 

He felt like every ounce of dignity he had built just got flushed away. 

His expression darkened as the shame crept in. 

Alice was packing her tools when she noticed his silence. 

She glanced over, then walked up and took his wrist. Her fingers pressed gently against his pulse. 

“Stop stressing over work,” she said, her tone even. “Whatever mess you’re in, it’ll sort itself out. But right now, the treatment’s over, and you need to sleep.” 

Eric didn’t say anything. 

To him, it felt like she was changing the subject to keep things from getting awkward. 

But it didn’t help. 

“Mr. Eric,” she asked again, “what’s got you so on edge?” 

She knew how to read people, but Eric gave her nothing. 

No expression. No shift. Just silence. Still, his pulse was off. Unsteady. Nervous.

“You’re still worried about that?” she said.

“You’re going to be fine.” 

Eric looked away. His voice was low.

“Come on, sleep,” she muttered, rubbing the side of her head. 

She had kept her focus through the entire session, but now that it was done, fatigue hit her hard. 

She let out a yawn, walked over to the small bed in the corner, and flopped down. 

“I’ll let you have the big bed tonight,” she added. “I’m generous like that.” 

Eric didn’t move. 

He stared at her with a blank expression. Sleep felt impossible. 

Alice didn’t wait. 

She shut her eyes and drifted off within seconds. 

Eric lay awake, shifting in the sheets, mind racing. 

Time passed slowly. 

When he finally heard her breathing deepen, he sat up quietly and walked over. 

He stood by her for a while, just watching. 

Then he leaned down, slipped his arms under her, and lifted her gently. 

She didn’t stir. She breathed steady and warm in his arms. 

He carried her over and placed her on the big bed, adjusting the blanket around her. 

For a moment, he just looked at her face. 

Then, with a faint smile, he climbed in beside her.
