“You don’t know what you’re talking about,” she snapped. “You’re just some backwoods nobody. 

“I didn’t come here to propose. I’m here to meet the Nolan elders with Mr. Eric. 

“We’re getting their blessing. We’re meant to be together. 

“As for you?” She stepped forward. 

“You should walk away be 

fore I make you.” 

Alice furrowed her brow. 

She hadn’t realized Yvette was this far gone. 

Today’s little performance made one thing clear–this woman had no idea how to think things through. 

“I invited the media too,” Yvette added quickly. 

“I’m sure you’ve seen the headlines about you.” 

Her voice softened into something that almost sounded like pity. 

“But I’m giving you a way out. If you leave now, I’ll make sure you and Risa can go peacefully. Whatever you want, we can work something out. 

“You know Eric. He doesn’t let things slide. 

“If you two keep staying under the same roof, he’s going to come after you. 

“I’m the only one who can shield you.” 

Alice finally got it. 

Yvette hadn’t come empty–handed. 

She came with a whole script and thought she was the lead, 

Too bad… 

“You understand now?” Yvette asked, smiling like she’d already won. 

Alice gave a small nod. “I do.” 

Yvette’s grin widened. “So when the reporters show up, you’ll tell them you and be divorced a while ago. That way, your image stays clean 

Alice tilted her head. “And I’m supposed to thank you?” 

Yvette gave a little shrug. “Don’t mention it. I’m just being generous.” 

Alice let out a sharp laugh that echoed through the yard.

Yvette’s face dropped. “What’s so funny?” 

Her friends started shouting, voices filled with fake outrage. 

But Alice didn’t flinch. 

“I’m laughing because that marriage license you’re trying so hard to ignore? It still counts. 

“Sure, it’s just a piece of paper. But it’s the law. 

“Your family must either be fearless or above the law to ignore it and do whatever you wish.” 

She stepped closer, her voice cold. 

“And Eric? His name is printed right next to mine. He’s my husband. 

“I don’t lend out what’s mine. 

“I’ve always been petty like that. 

“Ms. Martinez, did it really not cross your mind that everything you’ve done today only made you look foolish?” 

Yvette’s hand shot up, aiming for a slap. Alice caught her wrist before it got anywhere near her face. She held it tight, firm and unbothered. Then she turned toward the house. “Mr. Eric,” she called clearly, “you can come out now.” 

Eric stepped into the doorway and narrowed his eyes at the crowd. 

Yvette’s face changed the second she saw him. Her eyes filled with tears, and her voice cracked as she spoke. 

“Are you really going to be this cold? I’ve cut off every path behind me just to stand here today and hear your answer. 

“If you say no, I’ll leave the country. I won’t come back.” 

She wasn’t pleading anymore. 

-She was trying to trap him. 

At that moment, Irene rushed out behind her, flustered and breathless. 

“Yvette,” she said, almost choking on her words, “you’ve been through so much these past few years.” 

Then came a stir at the gate. 

The crowd parted as a group of reporters pushed through with cameras already rolling. Flashes blinked like tiny explosions as they stepped into the yard. 

Even they froze for a second, caught off guard by the sight in front of them. But that pause didn’t last. They swarmed Yvette like bees to sugar. 

“Ms. Martinez,” one asked, holding out a mic, “what exactly is going on here?”

Yvette turned, lifted her chin, and looked straight at Eric with a soft gaze. 

“I came today,” she said gently, “to propose to the man I love 

Reporters glanced around the courtyard, searching for the mystery groom. 

They scanned every face, but no one stood out–until Yvette raised her hand and pointed directly at Erie. 

“Um, so who’s the lucky man, Ms. Martinez?” 

“Him,” she said. 

Gasps rippled through the press line. Cameras snapped faster. The silence broke into a wave of shocked 

murmurs. 

Eric? Everyone knew he was married. He and his wife weren’t just married on paper–they were a real couple. 

They had been seen together often, and they never looked anything less than close. 

So why this? 

“I’ve always liked him,” Yvette said, her voice soft but steady. 

“We grew up together. We studied side by side. Our lives were always close. 

“In the beginning, I stayed away. He was engaged. We respected that. 

“But later, his health took a turn. 

“And I had to leave the country for personal reasons. 

“But now I’m back. 

“There are things I need to say. Regrets I need to fix. And this time, I won’t let anyone else get in the way. 

“I want to speak from the heart.” 

Eric didn’t move. 

His face stayed still, as if none of this had anything to do with him. 

But the cameras kept aiming right at him. 

Yvette didn’t stop. 

“I know this is hard. I know it feels like I’m climbing mountains just to get to you. 

“But one day, I believe this will be our favorite memory.” 

She inhaled slowly, then looked at him with clear, unwavering eyes. 

“Let’s get married.”

Eric looked down at the mic, then raised his head slowly. 

The air shifted. 

His silence pressed down like thunderclouds before a storm. 

The reporter’s hands shook. 

He lowered the mic without realizing it. 

His voice was gone.
