“I’m sorry about your parents,” Sebastiana says as we walk out the back of the packhouse. I gave her a tour of the packhouse, but now she wants to see the pack lands.
I shrug. It’s still painful to talk about.
“Your brother is helping me a lot. Did he tell you we think my father might have been murdered?” I ask her.
“No, he wouldn’t have told me that. Why do you think so?” she asks, obviously concerned.
“The way he died, the medical stuff, none of it makes sense. He’s sent my father’s medical records to the Council. We’re waiting to hear back.”
“Who would have done that?” she asks.
“We think it was my father’s Beta,” I say, and, she gasps.
“I’m so sorry,” she says.
I shrug again. “We’re keeping our investigation quiet. Christian isn’t sure who else might be involved. I didn’t want to tell Enya, but he said we needed to.”
“Don’t underestimate her because she’s a she–wolf, Shane. We’re stronger than we look.”
“Is that so?”

She gives me a sassy smile that has my body unexpectedly reacting.
“What do you love about your pack lands?” she asks, changing the subject.
“The forest. It smells like evergreens. I love that smell.”
“What do I smell like to you?” she asks. Because I’m feeling flirtatious, I lean in, putting my nose near her throat.
“You smell like a forest.”
“Not evergreens?” she asks.
“Are you hoping I’m your mate?” I ask her. For some reason, the idea
excites me.
Rather than answer me, she stops and looks at me.
“You should kiss me.”
I frown. “Why?”
“So we can see if we’re compatible, silly,” she says, as if it’s obvious.
“Compatible for what?”
She rolls her eyes as if I’m missing the obvious point. “You and I are the same age. We’re going to go to the Academy at the same time. We should see if we’re compatible so we can be partners in the sex class.”
“You want to be my partner in the sex class?” I ask, shocked.
“If we’re compatible, yes. I wouldn’t want my first time to be with a sweaty Alpha who is fumbling around trying to find my clit,” she says.
Since I haven’t been with a woman, I’m not sure I could find her clit.

“How many men have you kissed to see if you’re compatible?” I ask instead. The idea makes me feel strangely possessive. I barely know this girl, but I don’t like the idea of her kissing other males.
She sighs dramatically. “None. You’re the first person I’ve met who is my age and will go to the Academy at the same time. Most of the Alphas I meet are my brother’s age or younger than me. So, I think this is a perfect opportunity for us to decide if we want to be partners when we go to the Academy.”
“I’m not sure it works that way,” I say.
“Oh please. My Uncle Dane is an instructor there. I’ll just let him know that we need to be assigned as partners, and that we’re both in agreement. I mean, you do find me attractive, right?” she asks.
“Well, yeah. You’re gorgeous,” I say.
“I think you are too. So that’s a good start for both of us. Now, kiss me so we can see if we’re compatible,” she says as if this is the most natural thing in the world.
“Ohhhhkay,” I say, completely unsure of what I’m doing, but willing to do it if it means I get to have sex with this girl some day in the future.
